Odina's Tarot Card Guide
The original tarot pack was a set of cards designed to aid the practice of CARTOMANCY , or divination by means of cards .Since the end of World War 2 tarot cards have become the most popular and widely used form of divination , with more than 230 different Tarot packs being published in the last twenty years alone .Although there are many beautifully designed cards now available the proliferation has resulted in a lot of the original symbolism , upon which the divinitory of the tarot rested , has now been weakened or in some cases lost .Modern day tarot packs nearly all consist of two very different sets of cards the
Major Arcana
and the complementary set known as
Minor Arcana
.
The twenty - two picture cards of the Major Arcana follow a traditional mumerical order and display detailed images which are linked with an ancient symbolism. The Minor Arcna ,which compliment the main set of cards ,consists of a total of fifty six cards and in many ways mirrors the familiar deck of household playing cards .As the traditional playing cards are made up of the four suits , hearts , spades , diamonds and clubs so the Minor Arcana are made up of sceptres , cups , swords and pentacles in turn these suits are made up of cards with their own numerical and symbolic identity .
Very few "modern day "or fashionable termed " new age " clairvoyants use the full compliment of seventy - eight cards as common opinion tends to lean towards the use of mainly only the twenty - two cards of the major Arcana as this is generally found to be sufficient for answering any questions regarding the future.Every experienced reader will have his or her own favorite set of cards ,preferred spread of the cards and their own set of criteria as to when they wish to bring the Minor Arcana into a reading . Through my own experience of the Tarot cards as a means of divination over the years , I have found that when using the Tarot to resolve an answer to a question , much like the most common use of the Runes for the same purpose , as a loose rule the Major Arcana is normally sufficient , however whenever a more cmplex issue needs to be resolved or the client requires a more in depth reading for any one of a number of reasons then the Minor Arcana can play a major role in a reading , often providing a much more detailed and precise reading .
The Tarot cards can be traced back as far as 1517 , although they were originally used as playing cards , and have been widely used as a means of divination and also , though less commonly , as a personal oracle, for several centuries . During the past twenty years the tarot have been used more and more with a dramatic increase in popularity during recent years .This is due not only to the arrival of the "New Age Stores" but also due to the fact that many other forms of divination such as the European Astrology or the Chinese Book of Changes take many years of study to become fully conversant with whereas four weeks study of the Tarot cards will enable a novice to feel sufficiently comfortable to use the tarot as an effective means of divination .
Over the next few weeks I will be compiling a simple to use guide for anyone wishing to learn how to use the Tarot cards for the first time .
