Relaxation And The Power Of Sound

 
                               
 
  Mankind has always instinctively recognized the power of sound.As far back as (AD 260 -340 ) the historian Eusebius reported a loud noise made by the King of Alba's  troops by striking their buckles with their swords , this sound was supposed to  encourage the Gods to channel their powers through the men , but incidentally struck terror into the hearts of their enemies . The "Rebel Yell"of Confederate troops during the American Civil War had much the same effect . We also know that a sound such as a car horn sounded near by can increase the flow of the blood to the heart by double.A high pitched sound can shatter glass , sounds made near to a sensitive surface covered in sand can produce subtle patterns in the sand .Music can have a calming effect or an exciting effect on the body again effecting the flow of blood to the heart.Sound can also be used as an effective means of relaxation , which is the subject I wish to tell you about on this page .
 
 
 
The effects of sound on the human body have been investigated through out the years by magicians , theologians  , scientists and modern day doctors .While it is has been accepted over the ages that sound can have dramatic effects on the human body a lot has yet to be explained as to why this is so .Perhaps the most frightening thing I have learnt about the power of sound is that new weapons against mankind have now been developed with horrific effects .A small gun like weapon which can burn a hole through human tissues , more effectively than a bullet , from long range and a "sound bomb " which can cause internal hemorrhaging to death of the population of a large area .It seems so tragic that sound which can be so calming and peaceful to mankind can now also be used to cause his destruction .However to move onto a lighter note I want to tell you about using sound as an effective means of relaxation .

The Mantra OM As A Means Of Relaxation

                    
Tantric texts suggest that certain sounds can bring a person closer to the center of all things , and in ancient times many potent mantras were made for this purpose . Perhaps the most famous of all these is the sound OM .This is considered to be the ultimate mystic sound , which when repeated often enough is believed to create a state of complete harmony within the human body .My understanding of the Tantric scriptures is limited , however , the basis of the explanation of the effect of OM on the body is that certain seed sounds respond to seven energy centers which are positioned at intervals between the bottom and the top of the spinal column . These energy centers are known as " Chakra's " and by the proper recitation of sounds such as OM cause coiled energy to travel up these chakras and so out of the body .My explanation as to how this works may be less than perfect but I can testify that it most certainly works .If you feel a little silly the first time you do this exercise , i know I did , don't worry as once you begin to reap the benefits of this exercise it will become second nature .
 
 
 

The OM Relaxation Exercise .

                 

If it is possible sit down alone in a quiet room ,

If you have any scented candles light one or two before you begin the exercise .

Sit down on the floor and cross your ankles or if  you feel more comfortable lie down on your back .

Now start to say OM , just say OM pronouncing it as it is spelt .

Say the sound slowly over  and over again and feel all the stress and worries

flow from your body,

Cleanse your mind by concentrating on the sound

OM , OM ,OM ,

As you  repeat it slowly.

Once you feel your mind clearing of all problems and focused on the sound

OM alone the exercise can end .

Each time you feel  yourself start to panic or get stressed out repeat the  exercise

Detach yourself physically from your problems .

Once you have  detached yourself from a problem it is much easier to deal with it objectively .

 
 
Crazy as it may seem to the uninitiated I have been using this exercise for years now , with great effect . I recently had an e-mail from a woman who was suffering from a horrendous amount of stress , I sent her the exercise much as it is written above , when I asked her if it had helped this was her reply .
" I think you should put the OM exercise on your page, it did relax me and help me get through some rough times this week. Of course my husband thought I was nuts but I did them anyway. "
