The Fighting Bits
As with many SCA evens, the martial arts play a large part in the fun and frolic of Festival. Many and hard fought are the battles and tourneys. The feature tourney is ineviably the Fighter Auction Tourney, which this year attracted a field of 120. The evening before the tourney, hundreds gather in the tavern to purchase a brave lord or lady who will fight for them on the following day. Some years the top fighters have gone for in excess of $300. This year Sir Gregory of Loch Swan fetched $220 at auction to top the list, with Baroness Mistress Rowan Perigrynne being sold for $185, despite her not actually being a fighter...oops. ;)
There is also an Unbelted Tourney for non-knights, and many, many war scenarios featuring heavy, light and mixed combat (including seige weapons). If that's not enough for the warrior in you, pick-up fights abound, and you scarcely need ask twice if someone is willing to hop into armour for you.
