Our Ancestors

George North

Georgios Tramountanas was born in Athens, Greece in 1822. He was from a family of shipbuilders/seamen who lived on the Isle of Limnos, but also had family connections to Salonika (formerly Thessaloniki). It is believed that he had been to Australia on a previous occassion, before coming back with his brother Theodoros, arriving in Pt. Adelaide in 1842. Georgios decided to stay here, but Theodoros journeyed on to Albany in Western Australia, never to be heard of again. The name Tramountanas means north wind from the mountains and before his marriage in 1858, Georgios Tramountanas changed his name to George North. He became a "Naturalised British subject" on the 8th April 1878.

 

George North marries Lydia Vosper on 26th September 1858

 

Lydia Vosper

Lydia Vosper was Baptised on10/1/1835 in Exeter, Devon-England. At the age of six she was living with her family at 6 St. Sidwell Tce. St. Sidwell, Devon, England. At the age of fifteen, after her father William dies, her mother Elizabeth, moves her children to 60 Poltimore Sq, St.Sidwell, Devon, England, where she runs a boarding house.
Lydia arrived at Pt.Adelaide, with her sister Cecilia, on board the Caucasian on 1/10/1855. They followed in the footsteps of sister Amelia, who arrived in Pt. Adelaide prior to 1846.

 

George & Lydia have two sons, George Henry and Hero Clare.

 

George Henry & Eliza Elizabeth North

George Henry North was born on 13th July 1861 at Greenpatch on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. After his schooling at Pt. Lincoln, he helped on the family property "North Park" until he married Eliza Elizabeth Valkema on 4th November 1884. They then settled on thier own property at Colley, near Colton on the Eyre Peninsula and have eleven children, 8 boys and 3 girls.

 

 

 

Hero Clare & Rosina Ann North

Hero Clare was born on 15th September 1862 at Greenpatch on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. After his schooling at Pt. Lincoln, he helped on the family property "North Park" until he married Rosina Ann Boylan on 18th May 1885. They then settled on thier own property "Newland Grange" at Colton on the Eyre Peninsula and have 11 children, 7 girls & 4 boys.
