Queen's Bands 2006 with Principal Hitchcock   The Queen's Bands again took part in the South Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 19 2006. Principal Karen Hitchcock was among the many parade watchers, and even managed to get herself invited to parade organizer John "Wacko" Hurley's house for a good view.
The next day, the Principal, the Bands, Arts and Science Dean Robert Silverman, several University representatives, and over 30 Boston-area alumni, friends, and family gathered for a Tricolor Reception on Fish Pier in Boston.

Mountain Climbing 2004-5   Alumni took on two nice peaks on outstanding days in 2004 and 2005. June 20 2004 saw a group take in views of Lake Winnepesaukee from atop Red Hill in Moultonborough NH. On Oct 2 2005, a particularly dedicated group made it up Mount Lafayette and down again just in time for a starlight picnic.

Queen's Bands Return   The South Boston Saint Patrick's Day parade of March 21 2004 again featured the pipes, drums, horns, and crowd-pleasing acrobatics of the Queen's Bands, resplendent in brand-new uniforms. Alumni sponsored a barbecue dinner for them at the Canadian-American club in Watertown on March 19th, which the pipers and dancers followed up with what is now a tradition of free impromptu performances in Harvard Square.

Queen's Setting Records at the Head of the Charles   The women's Queen's rowing team shown here in the 2003 Head of the Charles Regatta was crossing under the Weeks footbridge on its way not just to winning its event but to setting a new course record. The men's eights had a tough act to follow but set a good pace and were only set back into the middle of the pack after a collision penalty. The Queen's rowers (sometimes also entered as Cataraqui Rowing Club) consistently qualify to come back to this premier competition held every October in Boston.

Mountain Climbing 2002   A Queen's contingent returned to Mount Monadnock on June 23 2002 to find that the mountain was still there but the surrounding countryside, judging from the view at the windy summit, had been completely replaced with a uniform greyness.  A decision to take the long way down proved to be a smart one, allowing us to enjoy the last part of the hike while the sun broke through the clouds.  Conditions for our August 18 visit to Greeley Ponds were similar with warm late sunshine, but the real highlights were the ice cream and swimming stops that followed.   Livermore Falls' near-tropical waters allowed me to get in, and that's really saying something. Our thanks to all of our hikers this year for coming out!

Gold for Canada   Relieved not to have seen Canada in the bronze medal men's hockey game that afternoon, alumni came to the Broomstones Curling Club in Wayland, MA on Saturday February 23 2002 to see what the club's CBC satellite feed would bring.   The lucky group was treated to live Canadian coverage of Marc Gagnon and Jonathan Guilmette's one-two finish in short-track speed skating followed by a gold medal for the Canadian relay team.   The last to leave also enjoyed the broadcast of the Tragically Hip playing for the Canadian Olympians in Utah.   Lucky door prize winners Peter Wysocki, Colette Heald, and Peter Stokes are now sporting warm selections from the Roots Canadian Olympic collection. |

Queen's Bands in Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade   On March 16th 2001 Boston alumni hosted a reception for visiting members of the Queen's Bands, then accompanied them as the pipers gave a number of impromptu performances around Harvard Square.   The Bands, whose celtic flair is known even here, were invited to participate in Boston's famous Saint Patrick's Day Parade on Sunday March 18th.

Mountain Climbing   On June 25th 2000 alumni gathered at Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire for a "walk in the park."   Several of us hiked the trail to the peak, while others joined when we returned to "base camp" for an afternoon picnic.   Markus Walbaum '83 also allegedly reached the peak this day, although we couldn't find him until we were all safely back in the parking lot.   Those who know Markus know he's not an easy fellow to lose. |
