I was born in Warren,Pennsylvania and lived there until 1996, when I was dragged , totally against my will and better judgement, to the great state of Ohio. I left Ohio and the USA in December 2000, and have lived in Darlington, England ever since. I became a British citizen in September of 2005 and now have dual USA/UK nationality. I did this so I wouldn't have to stand in the "other nationalities" queue at Teesside Airport when re- entering the country...that's about the only good it's done me so far. I still own a house in Pennsylvania and still speak "American" and have not tried to adapt here in the slightest. (I'm such a rebel) But enough about me .
For years I had been trying to research my family history and had failed miserably. No one ever talked about ancestors and by the time I really got motivated, anyone who could help me was among the nearly and dearly departed. I packed up the Ouija Board when I was in my teens, after it told me I'd marry someone named "Gary" from Colorado and I don't know how to conduct a seance, so I was stuck. I had a few pieces of information to go on and that was it. Some of the information I had was incorrect and had been manufactured in my paternal grandmother's vivid imagination. One of the other problems was the fact that changes in spelling due to people's errors while census taking and the fact that some family members couldn't read or write caused the name "Cawley" to be spelled in a variety of ways. The name "Cawley" was spelled wrong on early census reports from Oil City as "Colley" and "Cauley".
Anyway, before I go on for pages here, one day while surfing around the Internet, I found a site for the Oil City Library and emailed them. They pointed me in the direction of the "Venango County Amateur Genealogy Club". Without these nice people..(Mary in particular), I'd still be totally clueless about "where I came from". They got me started and totally by accident one night on a free part of Ancestry.com (is there such a thing?), I found all the missing links.
My Cawleys are originally from Ireland, specifically the County Kildare area and Carbury Castle, which they lived in for many years. The family somehow got to the New England area of the USA and then my branch ended up in Pennsylvania. If you look at the family tree, you will see how many times the spelling changed.I know I have relatives out there somewhere, but have no clue "where".There are probably some still in Maine or New Hampshire which is where the family was for a long time and there may be some still in the Bradford,PA or Oil City,PA area.
This site is a tribute to Carbury Castle and the Cowley/Colley/Calley/Cawley families and has brought me new friends and relatives since I first put it up in 2004. I hope to go back to Ireland someday and visit Carbury and Edenderry and hopefully, takes lots more pictures.
I would like to thank the nice people at the Warren Public Library in Warren, Pennsylvania (especially Larry) for their efficiency and kindness in humoring me with my many email requests. Other people have also been duly thanked on various pages on this site.
Update:September 2008: As a result of this page, I now have three cousins I didn't know were out there. Welcome to Cousins Richard , Lilly and Mar. We're having fun trading information and I've received some nice photos, some of which have been added to this site. AND,as of July 2009, a Hulings cousin has also been in touch! I sort of have a problem these days with people "borrowing" information and pictures and adding to their own sites. It would be nice if you asked first! Some of the info that has been borrowed , has now been updated and is no longer correct!
I have also been in contact with the nice man who has "The Peerage" . I sent him some information about an ancestor, and he has added it onto his very impressive site.
This can be viewed at:
