**Aug 23,1008:Conflicting information on Ancestry.com and the "Irish Peerage" is giving me a headache. I'm trying to wade thru and if it's correct and I can decipher it all, I may have the family traced back to around the year 1000 and Normandy, France. Stay tuned. Three straight days of this has me seeing "things". Way too many people named Walter and Robert here...and too many conflicting dates and people married at age 5 and living to be 319 years old??

4th Great Grandfather Samuel Cawley* Born in Epping,New Hampshire in 1782, and was a farmer. (Died in 1842,but not in the state of New Hampshire as I had a search done for his death certificate.) Married Betsey Sanborn who was born in Sanbornton.

3rd Great Grandfather Chase Sanborn Cawley* Born in 1815 in Stokely,Canada Died October 9,1895 in East Haverhill,New Hampshire and was buried there. He was a stone mason. Married: Polly Fairbanks Morse in 1838, she was born in 1821.(I have copy of death certificate for Chase S.)

Son- Samuel Born about 1849

Billy Bass also living with family in 1860 aged 2
Stepson (?) James also living with family in 1870 Census

2nd Great Grandfather John H. Cawley* Born in 1847 in New Hampshire. Died on April 28, 1888. He was struck by a train and killed in Venango Cty ,Pa. near Columbia Farm while walking home. This is a confirmed fact and the obit appeared in the "Venango Spectator" newspaper on May 3, 1888. He was 41 and an empty whiskey bottle was found near his body.
(I have found information that a John H. Cawley served in the Civil War,enlisting in 1864 in Pennsylvania and fighting on the Union side. This John H. Cawley was in the 58th Infantry,Company G and was sited for "Distinguished Service". He would have been 17 at the time. This may or may not be my Great Great Grandfather and most probably..isn't)

Married Fanny Rutherford ,who was the daughter of Patrick Rutherford, born in Milltown, County Down,Ireland. She came to America at approx. Age 15. The death certificate for Fanny has her born on August 2,1855. This information was supplied by her son ,Chase, and I believe the year may be incorrect. The census information I have would put her birth year at 1850 or 1851 instead. Fanny died on the 28th of December 1923 at the age of 68 (?) and was buried in the cemetery at Petroleum Center,PA on the 31st of December. She may have really been 72 instead of 68 if several census papers are correct. Update:June 12,2006- I just found her on the 1870 census living in Jamestown, Mercer County keeping house for the Rev. William and Nancy Cook and their children, Henry, Eliza and Robert. This entry is for Fanny Rutherford, born in Ireland which appears to possibly be the correct person as it puts her age in 1870 at 20. It also means she came to the USA in approx.1865.

Son- John Edward*
Born 19 November 1875 and died April 29, 1931, Brocton NY while working as an Engineer on Pennsylvania Railroad. Buried in Petroleum Center,Pa., most probably in a grave with no headstone.

Daughter- Lillian E. was Born in 1877, Died June 17, 1939, age 62. Was married to Vice President of Oil City Trust Co.,Arthur Helle. Had son named John Vernon Helle who was born on the 23rd of May,1902. He (John Vernon) had two sons named John Vernon Helle,Jr. and James Arthur Helle.

Son- Samuel who was born in August 7, 1878 Died.? He was still alive in 1953 as he is listed on Fred's obit as living in Westfield,NY.

Son- Frederick Leslie, who was born September 1, 1881 Died 30 November 1953 in Bradford,Pa. According to the 1910 Census, Fred was a widower in 1910 and he and his three year old daughter, Mildred, lived with Fannie in Oil City. This contradicts the information I had stating that Fred "never married". (I thought Mildred was Samuel's child?)

Daughter- Polley or Paulene or even Frances Paulene (?)(Also seen as "Folly" on some census records.) Born in 1883. Married a Mr.I. Molter and had a son named Frederick, also twins who died at birth.

Son- Louis Laverne, who was born 7 June,1885 Died 5 December 1900 in accident on an oil rig at age 15 .I have an obituary for Louis on another page.

Son- Chase Amon, was born in May 6, 1887 (*this birth date is taken from the WW1 Draft Registration Card which appears on Ancestry.com and is in his own handwriting. Sadly on another registration card for WW2, he gives his year of birth as 1886 and his eyes changed from brown to blue!) Chase died on December 11, 1968 and according to the Bradford Era, he died at the Hotel Holly in Bradford. He married Alma Naoma Baker who died on 11-6-1945 in Bradford. Children; Beulah Marie- Married Scott McIntosh Rote, Kenneth Frederick who married Neva, Clifford Chase who married Florence Warner and had DeWayne Chase and Lillian Elma, Louis Lavern (who died at birth),Gordon Lyle, Mendal Baker.

Daughter- Mary was born in March 1890 (?), which is odd since John Cawley died in 1888 after being struck by a train. I hope someone can confirm or deny this birthdate. She married Leroy E. Kellog in 1907, then married Ray Blanding who was Edward's stepson and Minnie Blanding Cawley's son from her first marriage.Mary died on December 16,1942 and is buried in Petroleum Center.

Great Grandfather John Edward Cawley * (known as Edward) Born in 1875 . Died of a heart attack at age 56 in Brocton, NY in 1931 in his sleep, and is buried in Petroleum Center probably in an unmarked grave. He was an Engineer on Pennsylvania Railroad at the time of his death.
Married Mrs. Minnie Blanding on Dec. 16th 1902. Minnie was at least ten years older than Ed and was born in 1863 in New York state according to census reports.

"Cawley - Blanding In North Warren"-Tuesday morning, Dec. 16, 1902, married by Rev. A. B. McCormick at his home, Edward Cawley and Mrs. Minnie S. Blanding, both of North Warren. The Warren County Directory for 1906 lists them living at 25 Washington, Warren PA, and Cawley was identified as a tooldresser. In 1908 they moved to 445 Prospect and he was listed as a fireman. The 1910-1912 Directories have them residing at 445 Prospect and Edward is listed as an engineer. (Railroad Engineer) They are absent from the 1914 directory, borough and townships. Minnie died on April 12,1913 and is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Warren,PA. Section 2,Single Lot,Grave #67. There is no headstone and I couldn't find the actual "number" as there was snow on the ground when I was there.

In the 1910 Census, Minnie is shown as age 47, Edward is listed as age 37, Harold is 5 ,"Bernice" is listed as "adopted daughter???" (Bernice was actually brother Samuel's adopted child actually and must have been living/staying with Ed and Minnie for some reason.) Ray Blanding is Minnie's son from her first marriage and is also living at the residence. Ray later went on to marry Ed's sister Mary. I believe Minnie originally came from New York state. I have an old piece of paper my Grandmother had which states Edward was also married at one time to an "Adda Westfall". I have been unable to find anyone by this name or any other information.

Edward married Juliet E. Smith Aug. 12th 1915. Juliet was born in 1893 and I was told she was "English". Ed was 44 when he married the 27 year old Juliet. I can find no mention of her after Ed died in 1931 and have no idea what happened to her. Although, I've actually been looking under the wrong first name. (See *.)*Update June 6,2007. After years of thinking and being told that the woman's name was "Julia", I found a document with her signature on it and her real name was "Juliet". Another small mystery solved, although she may have actually used "Julia".
Son- Harold Westfall Cawley Sr.* Born 20 Dec.1905 Warren,Pa Died in 1946.Buried in Sheffield Cemetery

Grandfather Harold Westfall Cawley Sr.*

Born December 20, 1905. Died at home of Menengitis on the 2nd of April, 1946, aged 41 and is buried in the Cemetery in Sheffield,PA. He was survived also by two half brothers and a half sister.(* Bernice was the half sister and Ray was the half brother, but WHO is the other "half brother?.) He was married to Adelaide Cecelia Himes (who re-married in 1948 to Edward Charles Currie)

Father Harold Westfall Cawley Jr.*

Born on Sept 13,1927 Died on Dec 2,1983 in North Adams,MA. He was 56 years old.Interment in Mausoleum at Oakland Cemetery. Married to Virginia Faye Dahle on July 9,1949.She was born on 11 November 1931 and Died on May 3, 2003.She was married to Dennis E. Flick at that time.
Daughter- Lynn Marie born on September 16th. * Married John Alexander Briggs January 11, 2002 in Darlington,England. Has lived in Darlington since December 2000. Became a British Citizen on the 7th September,2005 and now has dual USA/UK nationality.* Not that I'm vain but this is how somebody known to me hacked the site and claimed to be "me" when they phoned Yahoo to cancel the site. I had my birthdate posted on here and of course, mother's maiden name is visible.
Son-Harold Edward (Hal) b 15 June, 1960. Graduated from Warren Area High School and went to college in Clarion ,PA and in North Adams, MA. Now lives in Santa Rosa, California and works for Luther Burbank Savings.
