  • MBAD 6153. Investment Management. Theory and pracitice of investment decisions of individuals and fund managers. Topics include the status of capital market theory, the efficient market hypothesis literature, and a portfolio performance measurement. Standard insititutional and investment analysis topics, futures and options markets, and international investment topics are covered.

2000 Spring Semester (MBA Program)

  • MBAD 6151. Financial Institutions and Markets. Major financial institutions, particularly commercial banks, and their role in the intermediation process and as suppliers of funds to the money and capital markets. Comparative financial policies of these institutions are examined in the context of their legal and market environment.
    • Asian Currency Crisis ~ Profound analysis of "Asian Currency Crisis," which occured in late '90. It covers the background, causes, and the role that IMF played.

  • MBAD 6152. Financial Management. Theory and practice of corporate finance including asset management, cost of capital and capital budgeting, optimization problems and socio-economic aspects of financial management. Computer technology may be employed when applicable.
  • MBAD 6171. Marketing Management. A managerial approach to strategic marketing decision making. Topics include promotional strategy, channels of distribution, demand analysis and pricing, and international marketing. Case studies, readings and simulations are used.
    • Application of Marketing Concept ~ The marketing concept applied at Honeywell. The focus is on the Sensing and Control department which manufactures fiber optic and VCSEL.

    • Case Analysis ~ "Verbatim Challenges 3M For Market Leadership" - What the strategy Verbatim should pursue to be the market leader in the computer media market.

    • Case Analysis (2) ~ "Alma Products, Inc." - As a start-up company in BBQ market, what is the best pricing strategy for the company is presented.


1999 Fall Semester (MBA Program)

  • MBAD 6161. Oraganizational Leadership and Behavior. Behavioral knowledge and skills essential to becoming an effective manager/leader including behavior and motivation in an envirionment of complexity and rapid change and ethical implications of actions and their effects on demographically diverse and increasingly international work force.
    • Individual Self-Assessment ~ Deep analysis of myself. The priparily focus is on "what do I bring to the role of manager that influence the way I act in that role?"

    • An Organizational Portrait - Part 1 ~ An organizational portrait on Verbatim Corporation, headquartered in Charlotte. As the first part of the portrait, it is focused on corporate introduction.

    • An Organizational Portrait - Part 2 ~ Second part of the organizational portrait. It is primarily focused on organizational five dimensions: Networked, Flat, Flexible, Diverse and Global. And also another three organizational dimensions, strategic, political and cultural dimension, are presented.

  • MBAD 6141. Operations Management. Design, operations, and control of service and manufacturing systems. Emphasis on using analytical tools for problem solving in process analysis and re-engineering, work-force management, material and inventory management, aggregate planning, total quality management, and others.
    • Total Quality Management ~ The concept of "Total Quality Management (TQM)", comparing with Business Process Reengineering (BPR). Monsato Group is presented as a case study. (Written by Andy Klie, Jie Liu and me).

  • MBAD 6131. Managerial Accouting. Management's use of accounting. Topics include profit planning and control, evaluation of performance, cost analysis, and income tax planning.
    • Management's Use Of Accounting ~ Summary for each chapter of how the material in chapters has been or could be used in a company. Nike is used as my case study.


1999 Summer Semester (MBA Program)

  • MBAD 6121. Business Information Systems. Examination of how information systems are developed and used in organizations, how information resources are managed, and the potential strategic and competitive impact information systems have in domestic and global business environments.
    • E-Bank.com ~ PowerPoint presentation about "Electronic Payments on the Internet." It covers comprehensive strategic plan, including technology, design of the system architechture, platforms and security system.

    • IT Outsourcing: Xerox Case & Virtual Organization: Colliers International ~ Analysis of Xerox as an IT outsourcing company. Analysis include critical factors of IT organization, development of outsourcing, the difference between global outsourcing and domestic outsourcing and so forth. The latter part is analysis of Colliers International as a virtual company. Analysis include the role of IT to enhance the organizational goal and recommendations to future IT architecture.

    • IBM, Apple and Microsoft ~ The report consists of four parts:Microsoft strategy to become a leader in software market, IBM strategy to control the market on the 60's -70's, comparison between Microsoft and Apple and examples of the new IBM strategy to re-entry in the software market.

    • Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com Strategies and Internet Solution ~ Analysis primarily focused on the comparison between Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble in terms of their business models and strategies. And also brief analysis of disintermediation created by Ecommerce.

    • Siebel and Vantive ~ Analysis of SFA (Salese Force Automation) based on Siebel and Vantive. Analysis include examples of how SFA can contribute to the company's competitive strategy and comparison between these two companies.

  • MBAD 6112. The Economics of Business Decision. Economic concepts in the decision-making process. Topics include scarcity; marginal analysis and tools of optimization; demand and supply analysis and market structure; economic efficiency; regression analysis; risk analysis and game theory and international economics issues.
    • How Risky Is Your Company? ~ PowerPoint presentation about risk management. This presentation is based on the article written by Robert Simons, professor at Harvard Business School.


1999 Spring Semester (Pre-MBA Program)

  • BLAW 3200. Legal Environment in Business. Legal environment in which business operates today; Legal, social, and ethical considerations of managers within the framework of federal and state regulatory laws; role and function of federal regulatory agencies and their impact on business activities.
  • INFO 3200. Foundation in Business Computing. Introduction to computer systems in business with emphasis on the capabilities of computer systems (hardware & software) and skills needed to effectively use computerized decision tools for typical business problems.
  • FINN 3120. Financial Management. Principles and problems of financial aspects of managing capital structure, least-cost asset management, planning and control. Securities valuation using Gordon Growth Model and CAPM.
    • FINN 3120 Term Project ~ IBM Corp. ~ Deep anylysis of computer industry mainly focused on IBM. The analysis is extended from the industry general identification to company and financial analysis objectively, using several financial ratio. Appendices include comprehensive figures used in the analysis and past five years' financial statements.


1998 Fall Semester (Pre-MBA Program)

  • ACCT 3200. Foundation of Accounting. Accelerated and in-depth study of conceptual foundations and applications of financial, cost and managerial accounting with emphasis on building accounting information bases for internal, managerial decision-making.
    • ACCT 3200 Project ~ Wal-Mart ~ The report consists of five parts: Picking company, General analysis of industry and company, Overview of the annual report, Overview of the 10-K and proxy statement and Financial statement analysis.

  • ECON 3200. Foundation in Economics. Overview of microeconomic and macroeconomic concepts. Microeconomics: scarcity, opportunity costs, marginal analysis, demand, supply and market structures. Macroeconomics: present values, national income accounting, interest rates, real values versus nominal values, monetary and fiscal policy, balance of payments. And economic growth.
    • Asisan Crisis ~ PowerPoint presentation about "Asisn Crisis." This presentation covers from the background to its impact to the world.

  • OPER 3200. Quantitative Analysis in Business. Quantitative business research methods, information sources, and introduction to management decision making.

1998 Summer Semester (ESL Program)

Natural Environment ~ Final paper of the ESL Program, focued on three different aspects: desertification, air pollution and ozone layer.
