I have just gotten this picture from Akiyama Saburo (thank you, Saburo-san). This is the official portrait of Oda Nobunaga, so you must have been seeing him countlessly in this exact pose and in this same attire. But it's not the same pic as the ones I have put on previous pages. Check it out yourself:

Another mixed-up fiberglass statue of Oda Nobunaga (the pic was sent by Lily Harrow; thanks a lot) -- not only that he is supposed to be young in this depiction and yet his head is shown as shaven (which he probably did after 40), but his way of wearing the kimono (characteristic of his 'Lord Fool' years at 17) and the attitude carved there (the Gifu phase when he was finally sure of his destiny) belong to different periods in his life.
This is Oda Nobunaga on the jacket of a book (thanks to Chiba Joe).

Ryu Daisuke perhaps interpreted Oda Nobunaga's personality too tensely. But since the days of silent films until this very minute, there has never been any actor playing the role as good as he did.
A very curious pic -- Oda Nobunaga with Akechi Mitsuhide, sent to me by Yohji from Sapporo (arigato, Yohji-san!) Oda's gesture indicates that this is a fictitious last meeting between them at the Honno temple on June 21, 1582, when Akechi attacked Oda there. Oda doesn't have any weapon with him -- nearly all depiction of his last hours during the attack leave him unarmed. But Akechi's pose isn't convincingly homicidal. Unless he couldn't face Oda even then, and tries to use his spear on Oda behind his own back!
This is said to be the last fight of Oda Nobunaga's, against Akechi Mitsuhide, too; the incorrect depiction is obvious even if you doubt my conviction that they hadn't even seen each other that day. Oda in this pic wears armor. He couldn't have. He'd just woken up. See the chronology of events on the day of Oda Nobunaga's death, at another page.
The official pic of Oda Nobunaga on a page of a history book (thanks to Chiba Joe). |
