Jillian Williams Date: 10-25-03
Grade:3 Subject: Science, Social Studies, &
Language Arts
1. Learning Goal/Objectives
The students
will be able to give both a historical and scientific explanation
of the book
making process. The students will also be able to use a problem
solving / decision
making process.
2. Student Grouping
Whole group, small groups, and individual will be used.
3. Methods
Teacher directed, student led, and learning through discovery.
4. Activities:
Opening: The
lesson will begin by reading aloud the book Across a Dark
and Wild Sea
by Don Brown.
Main Activity or Activities:
After reading the book, the children
will create their own paper like
Columcille did during the Dark Ages. The children
can experiment with
different materials and see how each item changes the physical
appearance and texture of their paper. This would also be a good
opportunity
to discuss the Dark Ages, the history of book making and how
technology has affected
the book publishing process.
After making the paper, the teacher
and students will discuss the
steps in problem solving. The students will then
break up into smaller
groups and imagine they are the King. How might they solve
the problem?
The students will then gather again as a whole and talk about the
solutions they came up with.
Questions to Ask:
After
the students have made their paper, ask them how they would
feel if someone took
it away from them. Ask the students how they would have
handled the fight over
the book. Ask students to compare their paper to a piece
of store bought paper.
What are the differences? What do they like and dislike
about their paper?
Closing:
Students will review what they have learned about making paper.
They will also
review the steps in solving a problem.
