Goal/Objectives
Through research children will be better able to understand
the time and places in which Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventure takes place.
2.
Student Grouping
As a whole group the class will make a timeline of the book's
events. The students will then be divided into seven groups and assigned one of these
seven research topics:
1.recipes from the book's time (typical dinner, menu
for a celebration)
2. price lists of commonly purchased goods
3. time line
of the period surrounding the book's events
4. descriptions or pictures of the
places visited in the book
5. copies of actual book-related news articles or
documents
6. songs, music, or dances from the book's setting
7. clothes of
characters of the period (paper dolls, catalogs, etc.)
3. Methods
The
teacher will act as a facilitator in the students' research.
4. Activities:
Opening: After reading Alice Ramsey's Grand Adventure the whole class will make a
timeline of the book events.
Main Activity or Activities:
The children
will research their topics and present them to the class. The presentations will
be displayed in the classroom.
Questions to Ask:
How accurate is Don
Brown's story?
How well does Don Brown depict the time and settings in his illustrations?
What
could he have done better or different?
Closing: The children will gain
knowledge from each other's presentations and will be able to revisit the information
in the classroom.
