Tip of the Week 26
Though this week's word, "corra" is quite common, it is slightly difficult
to find in the dictionary, being hidden in the entry under "còrr".
of which it is a form. But even when you do find it, you get very little
information about it.
To cut a long story short, "corra" means "the odd one here and there",
"the occasional", "a few", "several".
What we are not told is that "corra" is followed by a noun in the
singular, and in the appropriate case.
... air son corra sheachdain fhathast.
... for a few weeks yet /for several weeks yet
Se fìor chorra dhuine a tha a-nis a' cumail bhò.
Very few people now keep cows.
It's the very occasional person who now keeps cows.
Cha robh pionar ach air corra chailleig
Only a few girls were wearing a pinafore.
Only the odd girl wore a pinafore.
Saoil am bi duine air son seo a dhèanamh ach an corra
uair?
I wonder if people will want to do this except on the odd occasion?
