Tip of the Week 25
There is still another way in which mòran and
beagan may be used, and
that is to express much more than and a little more than. e.g.
Chan urrainn dhuinn mòran is tuaiream a thoirt seachad.
We cannot do much more than hazard a guess.
Cha robh e ach beagan is dà fhichead bliadhn' a dh'aois nuair a
bhàsaich e.
He was only a little more than forty years old when he died.
Chan eil ach beagan 's dà bhliadhna bho chaidh an club a
stèidheachadh.
It is only a little more than two years since the club was established.
Bha an dìg beagan is trì troighean air doimhne.
The ditch was a little more than three feet in depth.
The is in these examples is a form of agus and is also found in the form
's.
Be careful! You cannot use this to say e.g.
"I have more than you".
We'll deal with this at a later date.
