Selected Families and Individuals

John Cappelletti was born on Sep 13 1912. He died on Oct 29 2002 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. He married Agnes Hansine Henriksen on Jun 17 1939 in Wautoma, ? County, Wisconsin.

Agnes Hansine Henriksen [Parents] was born 1 on Nov 3 1904 in Arkdale, Adams County, Wisconsin. She died on Jan 16 1993 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. She married John Cappelletti on Jun 17 1939 in Wautoma, ? County, Wisconsin.

Perhaps this was an opportune time to collect my thoughts and memories and put them down in writing. I spent the first 25 years of my life with Grandpa Hans Mikkel and Grandma Karen on the farm with my mother and father. I have vivid memories of climbing on grandpa's lap and playing with his long beard while he shared his tales of adventure. Grandma Karen tended to be domineering and maintained control over the household, and we all, mother included, obeyed her commands. Grandma (Bestemor) planned ahead for her demise of physical abilities because she encouraged me to learn to read the Danish Bible so that I would eventually be able to read to her when her eyesight failed in later years.

To back track a bit, I was born on November 3, 1904, the oldest of Harvey and Mathilde's four children. Danish was spoken in our home, so when it came time to start school, I had to learn a new language. I attended Cottondale School which was a good two miles from home, so it was a long walk.

I attended Friendship High School. During my second year I contracted flu and missed a good deal of school. A teacher tutored me so that I was able to catch up with studies and complete high school in 3 1/2 years. I recently celebrated the 60th reunion of my high school class. I attended the University of Minnesota and Stevens Point College where I graduated in 1929 with a Bachelors degree in education. While working on my degree I also taught school. I went on to teach for 10 years at the County Normal in Wautoma, where I had Helen Henriksen Stoller as a student.

On June 17, 1939 I married John Cappelletti. It is customary for the groom to be absent minded on his wedding day, but in this case it was the pastor. Joe Stein married us, but not before a hurried search for an appropriate wedding suit for him, as he had forgotten his suit at the cleaners. Harold and Wallace were groomsmen. (Henriksen brothers)

We have one daughter, Nancy, who is a registered nurse, having graduated from Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota. My cousin, Lelia Henriksen Graham graduated from the same school, as did my sister, Lenora Henriksen Kolpin. Nancy is married to Donald Mansavage and they have three children, Tara Maria, age 18, Donald Joden, age 17, and Thea Lauren, age 14.

I have always enjoyed travel and have made four trips to Denmark, where I visited the birth places of our ancestors. Some other countries I visited were Poland, Finland, France, Italy, China, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, but it was always very special to go "home" to Denmark.

Now much of my time is spent giving talks and showing slides of our trips, to Senior Citizen groups, retirement centers, and various organizations. I am active in our church, the Danish Sisterhood Lodge, and relax by collecting blotters and making quilts.

I have covered a lot of territory since my days among the sand-burs on the farm near Arkdale, Wisconsin and do count my blessings over and over.

The twins, Hans and Harvey, were as opposite as could be. Hans had beautiful dark curly hair and ready to fight with any boy that came along. (see Harvey for additional notes)

Hans did not stay long in Iowa, but traveled west to the Dakotas, Canado, and Minnesota where he met a girl, Carrie Bassett from a family of ten children. Finally, he bought and settled on the Ole Olsen farm. (Olsen and family moved out to the state of Washington.)

Gustave Weylandt was born 1 in Feb 1861 in Sweden. He died in Apr 1936 in Strongs Prairie, Adams County, Wisconsin. He was buried in Mt. Repose Cemetery, Friendship, Adams County, Wisconsin. He married Christine Laurine Henriksen in 1891 in Fairview, Jones County, Iowa.

Christine Laurine Henriksen [Parents] was born 1 on Apr 1 1873 in Nakskov, Lolland, Denmark. She died on Dec 11 1960 in Ontario, San Bernardino County, California. She was buried on Dec 17 1960 in Mt. Repose Cemetery, Friendship, Adams County, Wisconsin. She married Gustave Weylandt in 1891 in Fairview, Jones County, Iowa.

Christine was a cry baby, and once when Walter and Ramsey were babysitting for her (while their parents were out working) they decided to hang her up by her legs.

Dancing was taught in the school, and Christine and Harvey enjoyed those hours while brother Hans would have no part of it. Hannah and Christine both met their future husbands in Stone City, Iowa. It is said that christine still enjoyed dancing and on the eve of her marriage to Gustave Weylandt, a Swede, they danced until the wee hours of the morning.

It is noted in the obituary of Hans Henriksen (Jr) that Christine was attending the funeral from her home in Ontario, (San Bernardino County), California.

Halver Svendsen was born on Nov 21 1823 in Norway. He died on Sep 30 1884 in Strongs Prairie, Adams County, Wisconsin. He was buried in Oct 1884 in South Arkdale Cemetery, Arkdale, Adams County, Wisconsin. He married Margit ?datter.

Halver and Margit Svendsen arrived in America in 1847. They first settled in the town of Norway near Wind Lake in Racine County, Wisconsin. The photo or Soren Bache's log cabin (right), located in Norway township near Wind Lake, Racine County, Wisconsin, built in the early 1840s was a typical Norwegian home. "Here was the seat of culture, and learning, the center of pomp and luxury, the stronghold of finance."

Margit ?datter was born in Feb 1819 in Norway. She died on Jun 11 1901 in Strongs Prairie, Adams County, Wisconsin. She was buried in Jun 1901 in South Arkdale Cemetery, Arkdale, Adams County, Wisconsin. She married Halver Svendsen.

THE MUSKEGO CHURCH NEAR WIND LAKE, RACINE COUNTY, WISCONSIN, BUILT IN 1843.

It is believed that Halver and Margit's first 2 children were both baptized at The Muskego Church which was located north of Wind Lake in the town of Muskego. This church is the oldest Norwegian Lutheran Church built in America, built in 1843. The church was moved to the campus of Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1917.

The Svendsens left the town of Norway after their son Ole's birth, and moved on to settle in the town of Strongs Prairie in Adams County, Wisconsin. There they had four more daughters: Anna, Margret, Rachel, and Sophronia.
  M ii Ole H Svendsen
F iii Anna Svendsen was born about 1853 in Strongs Prairie, Adams County, Wisconsin.

Anna is listed in the 1860 census at the age of 6 as dumb & idiotic. She is listed in the 1880 census again as idiotic. In today's medical terms, she would be considered as having a severe learning disability.
F iv Margret Svendsen was born about 1855 in Strongs Prairie, Adams County, Wisconsin.

My great-grandmother, Clara (Swenson) Henriksen, told me the story that two of her father Ole's sisters set out for the West in a covered wagon and were never heard from again. Based on their ages, the fact that they do not appear in the 1880 census in Adams County, and that his sister Anna was disabled, it is assumed that Margret and Sophronia were the two sisters of such independent, pioneering spirit that disappeared.
  F v Rachel Svendsen
F vi Sophronia Svendsen was born about 1860 in Strongs Prairie, Adams County, Wisconsin.

STONE MARKING THE FORMER LOCATION OF THE FIRST LOG CHURCH OF THE NORWEGIAN EVANGELICAL CHURCH AT ROCHE-A-CRI (1859-1968).

The Svendsens became members of the newly-formed Norwegian Evangelical Church at Roche-a-Cri, which built a log church in 1859 to the southwest of the village of Arkdale, the location now known as South Arkdale Cemetery at 18th & Cypress Avenues. That church was destroyed by a stove fire in 1868. A frame church was erected that same year one mile north of the old log church location, which is now known as West Arkdale Cemetery, at 18th & Cumberland Avenues. That church was destroyed by a cyclone in 1872.
With faith undaunted, a larger church was built on the same site in 1875. Known as the West Church, it served as the congregation's spiritual home for 53 years. In 1919, the West Church had joined with two other area Lutheran congregations to form a united parish called "Trinity Lutheran Church." In 1921, one of the church buildings was donated to Norwegian Lutherans forming a church in Adams. Then the West Church was struck by lightning and burned to the ground on July 12, 1928. The parish members consolidated at the remaining church building in the village of Arkdale, where the church continues as "Trinity Lutheran Church" to this day.
