Very little was known until recently about my great-grandfather's brother Gustav Hintz. I did not know he existed at all, until a visit with Uncle Irwin & Aunt Maleda Hintz. We were discussing my great-grandfather Reinhold's sisters, and Irwin said, "And Uncle Gus." I asked, "Do you mean Gustav Vollmer?" (His mother had a brother Gustav, too.) He said, "No, Gus Hintz."
Uncle Irwin went on to explain that he didn't remember much about Uncle Gus. He and his wife came to the Hintz farm for a visit when he was very young (probably in the 1910s or 1920s), but he didn't know Gus's wife's name, and he didn't know where they lived. He assumed it was far away since they never came for a visit again.
Upon searching www.familysearch.org in 2006, I found in the 1880 Census a listing for the Charles and Friderike Hintz family in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, which included Gustav, Reinhold, Louise, and a sister I also had not known about, Auguste Hintz. (The youngest sister, Matilda, was not listed on this 1880 Census; she was not born until 1881.) It also shows that Gustav was born in Prussia, which is why I never found any birth records for him in Milwaukee County. I finally had documented proof of "Uncle Gus"!
I recently subscribed to Ancestry.com, and was able to locate Gustav Hintz and his family in Milwaukee. He grew up in Milwaukee, and that is where he stayed and raised his family. It is presumed that he died in the 1920s, which is why he never came to visit the Hintz farm again.
