Euro Report – Glynn Barnstown win out in Barcelona

Europe’s most recent addition to the European GAA comes in the form of the Barcelona Gaels. The team had originally set a challenge match to Wexford’s Glynn Barnstown to come to Spain to play a “European Team”. The Gaels less than a year on the go, had hoped to make up the missing numbers in their ranks with the help of fellow European clubs. However in the weeks preceding the tournament, as more local players began to find out about the game and the team, the Barcelona Gaels looked ready to manage a full squad, with the assistance of one or two enthusiastic players from Madrid. So with The Hague players travelling down to lend support and representatives from Luxembourg, it was adding up to be something special. “If the numbers this weekend proved to be a great success, the weather would have to be the counter point,“ said Gaels Chairman Steve Campbell.

With the ground men at CEM Marbella rugby grounds declaring the pitch waterlogged and unplayable, the teams switched the tournament indoors and quickly drew up a compromise format for the at C.E.M. Ten aside, trainers and no kick points.

Glynn-Barnstown recorded a victory in the first match over Den Haag thanks to some inspiring play by Paddy Fortune (1-2) and P.J. Carley (1 goal), though Den Haag veterans, Willie Hempenstall, Daithí Ó Caoimh and Bernard Geraghty tried to raise the game, the Dutch side failed to capitalise on some defensive errors by the Glynn Barnstown squad; the final score: 2-3, 1-3.

Glynn Barnstown: 2-3 (Fortune 1-2, Carley 1-0, Laffen 0-1)

The Hague: 1-3 (Hogan 0-2, Hempenstall 1-0’ Kirwan 0-1)

The Wexford side on to impress against the Barcelona, Pearce Donovan (1-2) this time punishing the Gaels back line with accurate shooting with Wexford all hurling medallist Gary Laffen showing pace and skill in midfield. Kilkenny man, Joe “Madrid” Murphy put in a solid performance in his controversial appearance for the Gaels. Steve Campbell (0-4) and Finbarr Barrett (0-3) both kept Barcelona in competition but the Wexford side rarely looked threatened. Glynn Barnstown 2-7, Barcelona Gaels: 0-10.

Glynn Barnstown: 2-7 (Donovan: 1-2, Furlong 1-0, Carley 0-2, Whelan 0-1, McGovern 0-1, Donovan 0-1)

Barcelona Gaels: 0-10 (Enright 0-1, Campbell 0-4, McCormac 0-1, McKernan 0-1, Barrett 0-3)

The final match saw fellow European GAA league hopefuls The Hague out to teach “the new kids on the Euro block” a lesson, but the young Barcelona side proved a solid match for the tough Dutch team. Gaels midfielder, Barry McCormack was to feel the pressure of visiting side early in the second half when a skirmish led to him being retired with a bloody nose as the Barcelona side riled to claw back a two point lead. Early pressure from The Hague’s Italian/Dutch forward combo of Battucini/Schouten Barry Hughes second half goal ensured the game would be contested to the last seconds and points from John Enright, Steve Campbell and Anthony Gallagher all contributed to a draw, 1-4 each.

Barcelona Gaels: 1-4 (Hughes 1-0, Enright 0-2, Campbell 0-1, Gallagher 0-1)

The Hague: 1-4 (MacMann 1-0, Hogan 0-1, Schouten 0-1, Hempenstall 0-1, Ó Caoimh 0-1)

Den Haag’s coach Willie Hempenstall though disappointed with the result looked to the future. "We know what to work on in training now and we will be much better prepared when we go to Rennes in March".

The tournament comes at a good time for both European teams, with a packed schedule through the summer months. “We’re hoping to get to at least two competitive outings this year,” said Barcelona Gaels newly appointed Chairman Steve Campbell, “obviously we’re the babies on the European circuit but we’re out to compete and we know the areas where we can improve.”

Campbell played down recent online chat about a St Patrick’s Day challenge match in Barcelona, “At the moment we haven’t confirmed anything, there’s an open invitation to any club who want to invite the city and play against us, that’s been the case since with started last year”.

Indoor Line-ups:

The Hague: Willie Hempenstall, Daithí Ó Caoimh, Colm Doyle, Tommy Briody, Kieran Kirwan, Neils Schouten, Davide Battucini, Gary O Mahoney, (Kerry Goalie), Bernard Geraghty, Orson MacMann, Shane Hogan, Eamonn O Brien (LUX),

European GAA Newcomers, Barcelona Gaels look to future rivals to spurn Irish attacks.

This Saturday will see the Barcelona Gaels (Spain’s first GAA organisation) host their first ever football match on home soil. The Gaels will team up with future European rival GAA clubs and field a “European Team” against Wexford’s Glynn/Barnstown squad.

The Gael’s who have thus far, both geographically and competitively, remained on the peripherals of European GAA are hoping to use this game as a springboard to launch the club on the European GAA scene. But the inclusion of two players from Spanish GAA football rivals “Madrid GAA” has caused a storm Celtic-Catalan storm. Gaels player-coach Steve Campbell was quick to play down the controversy, “We’re a new team, we’re only established a year now and we’re trying to field a team from a very small pool of Irish lads here, we are always on the look out for Catalans, Spanish and players from any country who are local to Barcelona to play, but for the moment we’re very grateful to the Madrid players and players from the other European cities to come down and support us”. “We’ve had injury troubles over the last few months and fielding a full side is close to impossible, but the Wexford lads can be sure of a well contested game” said Campbell.

This Saturday sees football players travelling from The Netherlands, Luxembourg and France teaming up with Spanish-based players from Barcelona (10), Madrid and Pamplona for a football match will be played against Glynn/Barntown Club, who will have up to 40 travelling for the match, approx 25 players, from their home village in Wexford, Ireland.

Barcelona Gaels were founded in February of 2001 and made their first appearance in the European GAA tour just months later that year at the BlackStuff 7-a-side Luxembourg. Since then the club has been holding regular training sessions throughout the year.

Finbar Barrett, co-founder of the Barcelona Gaels is looking forward to the encounter, “We’re a year old and on the way to successfully establishing ourselves as a future force in European GAA, it is a great honour to host a Gaelic football match in Barcelona and we thank our sponsors KerryGold for affording us this opportunity,” said Barrett.

Mick McGrath, infamous barman at Barcelona’s Michael Collins Irish Pub and left corner forward for the Gaels seems quietly confident of his teams chances in their opening game of the 2002,. “We’ve been practicing pints over the bar a little more frequently than points over the bar, but I think we should shade it” said McGrath. He went on to comment: “Our rigorous winter training sessions should stand to us and I’ve a new pair of shiny boots and that’s sure to play a vital role in the psychological war out there!”

The game is expected to draw quite a crowd on Saturday. Declan Lynch is a director/producer who is currently making a documentary about the Gaels. “They’re a fascinating phenomenon and are really popularising GAA sports in a city that is soccer mad”, says Lynch. “The documentary is about the teams struggle to establish themselves and travel to Europe on tour, this Saturdays match is a vital link in the story.”

Pre-match training and press conference on 14th Feb 2002 at 1pm at Complex Esportiu de la Mar Bella. The Barcelona Gaels are sponsored by Kerry Gold.

Glynn/Barnstown meet the Barcelona Gaels on Saturday 16th Feb 2002 at Complex Esportiu de la Mar Bella.

ROUND 1 , Sat 23rd March , hosted by Rennes GAA

The Ar Gwazi Gouez (Breton for "The Wild Geese") GAA Club will host the First round of the 2002 Euro League, probably at the Le Rheu Rugby Club in Rennes. Our thanks to Reamann, Thomas & Co for their efforts.

PREVIEW

A chairde,

An invitation to you all to the Rennes GAA football tournament which will be held in Rennes on Saturday March 23rd. Last year we had teams from Guernsey, Brest, The Hague, Paris, and Brussels, and it is hoped that all will be able to return for this years event. In addition we will hope to have An Laimh Dearg, Reamann Herron's home club from Belfast.

In addition we would be very pleased to have Lannion, Luxembourg, Barcelona, Munich, Zurich and Frankfurt, many of whom we have been in contact recently and would be very keen to strengthen our ties with. In the case where I have forgotton anyone (Liberty lads, Dusseldorf?), could someone please forward this to the relevant people.

The tournament will be 11 a side, however teams unable to field full teams are most welcome as merging clubs will be done if necessary. From the perspective of ladies football, would all clubs having female members who would be interested in a match during this event please contact me on an individual basis, so that I can determine the feasability of this.

From our club's perspective, the most important thing is to have representation from as many clubs as possible for this event. We are fully aware that teams like Munich and Zurich are geographically far removed from us, however we would very much appreciate if even a limited number of representatives could be present. We will do our absolute upmost to reciprocate this attitude throughout the rest of the year.

I would be grateful if the relevant people could let me know asap of their potential participation (definite confirmation not needed for another 3 weeks), or any questions regarding the event.

Le meas,

Phil Golden

Rennes GAA.

PREVIEW

Paris Tournament, April 13th 2002

Six teams will battle for the Paris cup and the 2nd leg of the 2nd European championship, with Paris Gaels needing a significantly improved performance if they are to win their 3rd Paris tournament in a row and restore some pride lost at the Rennes tournament a few weeks ago. This will be the third such tournament hosted in Paris and the 1st Ladies tournament. So far at least 100 visitors have confirmed their participation as well as fifty from Paris. Seven teams will take part: The Hague, Munich, Luxembourg, Rennes, Frankfurt and two teams from Paris. It is not too late to participate: www.parisgaa.com.

A journalist from the local newspaper, “Le Parisen”, recently wrote an article about the Paris Gaels and our tournament featured in it with the result that there may well be a few curious locals coming to watch the Irish play their national sport!

The ball will be thrown in at 11:00 am by one of 2 referees from Croke Park (who will also judge the Player of the Tournament).

There will also be a Hurling match scheduled during the day for anyone who is interested in playing. Refreshments will be provided on the day and a local Red Cross team will be in attendance.

Regarding the evening’s entertainment, from 8 p.m. on, the restaurant “Le Saulnier” in the 10th arrondissement will be where it’s all happening. (Address: 39 Boulevard Strasbourg, 75010 Paris. Metro: Château d’Eau,  (http://perso.wanadoo.fr/le_saulnier/index.html). A private room that accommodates up to 170 people has been reserved, so please contact someone at www.parisgaa.com should you require any extra places. The restaurant is easily accessible from the tournament grounds as it is situated on the same subway line (line 7).  200 printed cards with directions will be distributed on the day. The three-course meal, wine and half a litre of Kronenborg will cost 20 euros cash per person. The meal will finish around 11.00 p.m. and the night will continue at one of the well-known Irish pubs of Paris (“Pubs” www.irishfrance.com).

It has been rumoured that the Irish Ambassador will attend the tournament and present medals to winning teams, the Irish Embassy are confirming today, whether his busy schedule will enable him to participate in what will be an enjoyable day for all involved.

We hope that all visiting teams have a good tournament and that you enjoy your trip to Paris.

Should you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Paris Gaels. Contact details are provided on our website.

ROUND 3 , Sat 4th May, hosted by Guernsey Gaels GAA
PREVIEW:

GUERNSEY GAELS

SATURDAY 4th MAY – ROUND 3 – EUROPEAN GAELIC FOOTBALL LEAGUE

FIRST ACTIVE GUERNSEY SPONSORED GAELIC FOOTBALL 7’S TOURNAMENT

Round 3 of the European League takes place in Guernsey on Saturday, 4th May, with the First Active Guernsey Gaelic Football 7’s Tournament. It’s the 5th successive year for Guernsey to hold a gaelic football tournament & all eyes will again be on the Rovers Football Club grounds at Port Soif.

Teams participating this year are Guernsey X 2, The Hague, Rennes, Jersey Irish X 2, Sean McDermott’s (Belfast) & debutantes in Guernsey, Ballela from Down.

The host club is a little disappointed with the lack of teams travelling from Europe but are grateful to have the support of the old reliables, The Hague & Rennes from the continent, for the tournament. The Hague have already taken the maximum 20 points available to them in the two previous rounds of the European League & Rennes have also picked up valuable points in their two excursions to date. Guernsey will be looking to make up some ground on their European rivals as they only fielded half a team in Rennes & missed the Paris tournament. Traditionally, Guernsey tends to do well in the 7 a side tournaments.

The presence of Jersey Irish, Sean McDermott’s & Ballela will give the European teams a chance to pit their wits & skills against some very stiff opposition.

Guernsey Gaels are once again indebted to their sponsors, First Active Guernsey, as without their generous support, the popular tournament would never take place.

SUNDAY 5th MAY – SIMPLY IRELAND SPONSORED HURLING TOURNAMENT

As part of Europe’s increased focus on hurling, Guernsey will also host a hurling tournament the day after the gaelic football. Tired & aching limbs will be sorely tested on Sunday, 5th May, as a combined European team, Jersey Irish,  Sean McDermotts & Ballela all do battle for the Simply Ireland sponsored trophy. This is the third time Guernsey will have hosted this increasingly popular event & big crowds are expected at the Port Soif venue to witness the spectacle.

Jersey Irish have already won the trophy twice but will have to be on top form to make it a hat trick of wins as the two Irish teams will also fancy their chances of success.  The combined European team cannot be ruled out either & they will relish their underdog status.

Again, the Guernsey Gaels are very grateful for the support of local restaurant, Simply Ireland, in hosting the event.

For further details contact Guernsey Gaels

Guernsey Gaels will host this event on the local Cricket Grounds on Guernsey Island. This tournament includes an invitation to Jersey Footballers, and the event has previously received sponsorship from  First Active and a local restaurant, Simply Ireland.

BRUSSELS ROUND 5, EURO GAA LEAGUE

Luxembourg make a clean sweep in the sunshine …

·         Their Ladies beat Brussels in the Final (4 teams competed - Brussels, Luxembourg, Paris & Munich played a round-robin with top 2 into Final).

·         Their men beat The Hague in the Final (9 teams competed - Brest, Brussels, Frankfurt, Guernsey, Luxembourg, Munich, Paris and The Hague [x2] with Guernsey & Munich being the beaten semi-finalists despite topping their respective Groups).

With the Munich Round 6 (10 Aug) and The Hague Round 7 (12 Oct) to come, an intriguing tussle is now developing between the top few - in particular, the top 3 The Hague, Luxembourg & Guernsey - to become the 2002 Euro GAA League Winners.

The EC Gaelic Club of Brussels wishes to sincerely thank:-

1/         excellent referees John Geaney from Cork & Micheal Ryan from Limerick (friendly rivals later as the Munster Hurling giants met at home);

2/         the GAA's International Dimension Committee for kindly making these fine refs available to us;

3/         the Euro GAA Clubs who travelled to support the Brussels Round 5;

4/         the British School of Brussels for putting their excellent facilities at our disposal for the day; and

5/         EC Club sponsors, the Wild Geese Bar (Fergal & team), which hosted dinner for all that night & also the presentation of:-

·         the EC Gaelic Club Perpetual Trophy & medals to the winning Luxembourg Ladies;

·         the Finnegan Brothers Perpetual Cup & medals to the winning Luxembourg Men; and

·         runners-up medals to the Brussels Ladies & The Hague Men.

A final word of thanks to Phil Golden of Rennes GAA who travelled to help prepare the Euro teams for the September Ladies & Mens Internationals in Dublin (including taking them through a special training session on the Sun morning 30 June).

PS - to those who mistakenly believe it's all sunshine in Brussels like last Sat, yiz should see the rain here yesterday & today Mon-Tue ! ! !

Féile na nÓg Sat 5th to 7th July,  Brux kids represent Europe, in Carlow
After a great 2001, let's just hope that 2002 can be even better. This year, the Brussels Underage team will represent Europe at the Féile Peil na nÓg in Carlow, for the third time.

There will be matches at the St.patrick's weekend Sports Festival, and at Brussels Tournament weekend at the end of June.

Munich Colmilles has started looking at the prospect of introducing the sport to schools in Germany. The club has had a number of enquiries already. With support from EC Club Brussels and the coaching CD-roms from the Coaching Co-ordinator, progress could indeed be made in this arena this year.

2001 Review

6th July 2001  Brussels Kids represent Europe at Féile na nÓg  On Thursday 5th July, the boys and girls teams teams from Brussels left the European mainland and touched down in Ireland to make their second appearance in  Feile Peil na nOg in Thurles from 6th to 8th July. The team played a number of matches,  recording a historic draw against a Wterford side. The team's matches were watched with interest by President of the GAA Sean McCague, and The Irish Indepenent carried a report on the Brussels Kids tremendous achievements. Well Done to the Brussels Kids for a fantastic achievement on represening the continent at such a major event.

Report here

23/24 June: As part of the preparation for next week's Feile na nGael,  Brussels invited Galway club Corofin/Sylaun to Belgium for the weekend 23/24 June, where we had several, much needed practice matches for the local Brux UnderAge Teams. We thank the Galwegians for travelling in such numbers, 20 kids and 6 adults, and the local organisers Gerry McGovern and John Ludden, plus the rest of the superb committee, as well as the parents of all the kids.

St Patrick's Weekend: On Sunday 18 March, the Brux kids braved very wet weather conditions to play in the EC Sports Centre in Overijse as part of the main family occasion of the Brux-Irish community's annual marking of St Patrick's Day.

On Sun 11 March the Brux kids went back training, thus taking their first step en route to representing Europe for the second successive year in the GAA's Féile Peil na nÓg from 6-8 July next in Thurles (as they did in Dublin last year). They were also out again on Sunday 1 April.

John Brady of Luxembourg, assisted by Maria Lane of Munich, will be  hoping to relaunch an effort into establishing Ladies Gaelic Football  image and making Ladies Gaelic Football events feature in the Calender year. They both take over from  Patricia Hickey, who for the last 2 year, took  charge of the Ladies Football development in Europe. Last year, Brussels played a challenge match in March, in May they teamed up with Luxembourg and played Paris, and at the end of June hosted the first ever 3-team Ladies Gaelic Football Tournament with Luxembourg, Paris and Brussels. In September the Luxembourg ladies travelled to The Hague to play the new Dutch team, as part of the Irish Sports Day in Netherlands.

Patricia based in Brussels, the ladies in this city hosted 2 matches in 2000 - February and July, where the Brussels Vs Rest of Europe were highly entertaining and closely matched encounters. The ladies in Paris, The Hague, and Luxembourg have been playing on an annual basis at the Blackstuff weekend, since mid-90's.

In 2000, the ladies from Europe represented the continent at the International Bi-Annual Football festival in Dublin, with representatives on the team from Belgium, Jersey, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. There, they competed against teams from Ireland, UK, US and AustralAsia and, while not winning, certainly put European Ladies GAA on the map. Joe McDonagh applauded their success on RTE TV on Sat night 24 Sept during the All-Ireland Gaelic Football Final preview.

This Year 2002, The European Ladies will again attend the International Event in September, but as a new 4-team European Clubs establish themself, and the European Selection Team plans matches against  established Ladies Football Clubs in Ireland or UK, the European Team is guaranteed to be a much better, fitter, and skillful unit by the time the International event comes around.   Munich has a few ladies also now playing.

Over the past 10 years Ladies have joined men on many Gaelic Football matches, and at most European GAA club training sessions.

Since the formation of the European GAA Board, ladies have held prominent officer positions, and the 'Irish Times' in a January 2000 report, gave special mention to
European GAA : a good example of women and men sitting on the one GAA Board.

2001

The Hague 15th September

Luxembourg travelled to The Hague where a close and exciting match was played as part of the Annual Irish Club Netherlands Sports Day.

Brussels 30th June

Refusing to be upstaged by the men,  Paris ladies won the 3-team Ladies Football event, against Luxembourg and Brussels on June 30th in Belgium. The Final saw a reversal from last-months match.  Paris goals made the difference over Brussels in a 2-4 to 0-5 final,  after Brux had earlier secured a semi-final win over Luxembourg  2-6  to 1-4 . Munich's one lady footballer joined the Paris ranks for the Final match.

Ladies Football Semi-Final:
Brussels 2--6  Luxembourg 1--4

Ladies Football FINAL
Paris (bye to final) 2--4  Brussels 0--5

Luxembourg 26th May:

Brussels Ladies travelled in far greater numbers than Brussels men, arriving with 9 ladies. Paris had a full squad with 11 players. Brussels were short a few players for the 10-a-side match, so experienced campaigners Ann Donnelly (Meath, ex-Paris) and Emma Ni Dhonaill (Donegal, Lux.) came to Brussel's rescue, and helped Brussels in their win over Paris Ladies 1--5 to 1--3. Played in blistering sunshine, this close & entertaining 10-a-side game, was the curtain raiser to the Blackstuff final.

Ladies Football Final
Brussels & Europeans 1--5    Paris 1--3

  Overijse, Belgium, on 18th March

Ladies from Brussels have already played at St.Patrick's Festival in Overijse, Belgium, on 18th March, while Paris ladies have been training hard in preparation for the year's fixtures, and The Hague and Luxembourg also hope to upset the Brussels favourites.
