ROUND 3 , Sat 5th May, hosted by Guernsey Gaels GAA

FOR FURTHER DETAILS

The teams participating were The Hague, Brest, Renne, Jersey x 2 and Guernsey x 2.

Played as 1 league, every team having 5 games. The Hague & Rennes combined to form 1 team.
Jersey A had 6 London Juniors playing for the team and we felt Guernsey 'A' would give them a good game therefore we set this up to be the last
game .

As both teams went into that game unbeaten. this game was made the final. The score does not tell the full story, as it was level at half time Guernsey A 1-4 Jersey A 2-1. The Jersey goalkeeper was outstanding in the second half making 6 point blank saves, 2 of which led to a counter-attack which produced a goal at the other end.

It was a good final watched by about 150 people. The weather was superb.

On Sunday 6th May 11:30am a hurling match featured Europe v Jersey (10 a side)

The Hurling match-exhibition took place on the Sunday, and although our European team struggled against a fresh Jersey side, it was however very competitive and watched by about 70 people. It was sponsored by Simply Ireland, a local restaurant.

ROUND 4 , Sat 26th May, Blackstuff 7-a-side, Luxembourg
Results & Report

Luxembourg are Champions of Europe

After a series of classic football matches and extremely close encounters The Gaelic Sports Club of Luxembourg (GSCL) defeated favourites Guernsey Gaels in the BlackStuff 7-a-side Final, to emerge as Gaelic Football Champions of Europe.

Much thanks goes to the players and members of Gaelic Sports Club Luxembourg Asbl, for organising the entire event, including food, refreshments, the venue, match schedules and referrees.

The BlackStuff 7-a-side Gaelic Football Championship hosted teams from Paris, Brussels, The Hague (Irish Club Netherlands -IC NL), Brussels, Liberty Lads (a group of Dubs based across Europe), Irish guest team Mountmellick, tournament favourites Guernsey Gaels, two teams provided by hosts Luxembourg, and two teams making their first appearances in European GAA competition, Barcelona Gaels and Munich Colmcilles.

Run in 2 leagues, the group winners & runners-up qualified for semifinals.

Group one with Irish Club Netherlands (IC-NL), Gaelic Sports Club Luxembourg 'I' (GSCL I), Liberty Lads and group favourites Paris-Brussels, saw Luxembourg'I' losing a semi-final place by just 1 point to group winners IC-NL, and although Paris/Brussels defeated Liberty Lads, earlier losses to IC-NL and GCSLI meant that Liberty Lads, who had defeated the Luxembourg'I' team, qualified for the Runners-up place.

Barcelona recorded its first European GAA victory over a Munich/MountMellick selection. The home team of Luxembourg'II' won all 3 of its round matches defeating Barcelona, Munich-MtMeillick , and with just a one goal victory over Guernsey. Guernsey defeated Barcelona and Munich were on the victorious side over tournament favourites Guernsey. Scoring difference gave Guernsey the fourth Semi-Final spot.

A great football semi-final between Dutch side IC-NL and Guernsey Gaels saw the sides level on 4 occasions, before 2 Guernsey points without reply marked the islanders' route to the Final. The second semi-final between home side GSCL II and Liberty Lads had the home supporters on edge up to the final whistle. A cracking goal by the Luxembourg was to seperate the sides at the end.

The hosts GSCL II played favourite Guernsey Gaels, for the BlackStuff 7-a-side Cup in an epic final watched by hundereds, which saw the Luxembourg clinch the Cup from Guernsey's grasp who thought they had done enough with 8 points. Luxembourg finished stronger, with a total tally of 2-5, winning the Blackstuff Title for the first time in almost a decade.

The Brussels Ladies plus 2 from The Hague defeated Paris Ladies 1--5 to 1--3 in a close & entertaining 10-a-side game which was the curtain raiser to the final.

preview - Guernsey favourites for 3-in-a-row

1999 & 2000 champions Guernsey are favourites to defend their BlackStuff 7-a-side Gaelic Football crown in Luxembourg on Saturday 26th May, Round 4 of the European GAA Tour.

Paris Gaels will be trying to bring the Cup back to its 1996-98 home in France, while the local supporters would welcome a Luxembourg victory. Last years surprise team EC Brussels narrowly lost to last year’s champions in the Semi-Final. The Hague team has contested 2 finals already this year.

Rennes, who have already secured wins this year over Guernsey, Luxembourg and Brussels will make their first appearance in the BlackStuff 7’s, as will the first-ever Spanish GAA Team Barcelona Gaels, and Germany’s Colmcilles of Munich. Who’d ever have thought of Barcelona Vs Munich in Gaelic Football ?

The annual BlackStuff 7-a-side is by far the oldest and most prestigious European-team tournament on the European circuit. 10 teams are expected to take part this year, with teams from Guernsey, Paris, Rennes, Brussels, The Hague, Barcelona, Munich, Luxembourg, Irish-club Mountmellick, and the Euro-Dubs.

SUMMARY

Well done to the lads & lassies of Paris Gaels who travelled down to Brussels on Sat 30 June & made a clean sweep of all on offer. Their men triumphed in an extremely closely contested 6-team Round 5 of the European GAA League.

Refusing to be upstaged, their ladies then went on to win the 3-team Ladies event.

The Brussels kids had their final workout before travelling to Thurles this Thursday 5 July to represent the European GAA Board in Feile Peil na nOg.

All matches were superbly reffed by inter-county referees Gerry Kinneavy from Roscommon & Michael Monaghan from Kildare.

Off the field, a most enjoyable meal - & presentation of the Finnegan Brothers Perpetual Cup & medals as well as presents for Gerry & Michael - took place on the premises of Brux GAA sponsor, The Wild Geese Bar-Brussels, later in the evening (& well into Sun morning too !!!).

Finally, on Sun morning 1 July, the European GAA Board members met to review progress and plan for the future.

Praise has been flooding Brussel's committee's way since the weekend, due to their well-run, well-organised and highly entertaining and successful weekend. To Cathal and co., well done !!!

TO ALL OTHER EURO GAA CLUBS (please forward to anyone & everyone else interested).

The EC Gaelic Club in Brussels is hosting Round 5 in the British School of Brussels (BSB) in Tervuren on Sat 30 June next, starting at approx 1.30pm

This will cover Mens' , Ladies' and Under-Age Football.

For the Mens', it will be Sevens like in Lux 2 weekends ago. We await confirmation on the numbers of teams but we plan that every team should have a min of 4 games with semi.s & a final after that. Placings to be decided by points (2 for a win, 1 for a draw. 0 for a defeat), failing that score difference, failing that scores for and, finally, failing all that toss of a coin. Playing rules exactly the same as in Lux. Croke Park has been asked again for 2 refs, not only for this but for Round 6 in The Hague on Sat 13 Oct too. Panels of 10 (but flexible enough to make sure everyone coming here wanting to play football gets a game ...).

For the Ladies', another Brux GAA & friends V Paris GAA & friends match, like that played in Lux, is planned. All Ladies' from all Euro Clubs and anyone else are welcome.

For the Under-Age, again all Under-Age from Euro Clubs welcome. We would appreciate your support for our youngsters efforts and to give them a good send on their "Trip to Tipp" the following weekend 6-8 July where they represent Europe in the Feile Peil na nOg in Thurles (while there, we will be the guests of the Killenaule GAA Club).

That evening, there will be a meal & presentation (& maybe even a beer or two!) at the premises of our main sponsor here in Brux, the Wild Geese Bar. Most pressing item on the agenda is accommodation. As we start relatively late in the day, teams like Paris, Lux & The Hague can easily travel that morning. For others, the Fri night will also be needed. We have worked out a rate with the Derby Hotel here in Brux which is on the road to drive /from the BSB, 2 mins walk to the 44 tram to/from the BSB & finally 10 mins walk from the Wild Geese (ie. no taxis needed). The rate we've negotiated is 2500 bef.s per night for twin rooms (1250 bef.s or 31 euros or IR24.50 per person sharing per night). But as always, the management is hounding us for firmer estimates etc for each night. RSVP ASAP would be greatly appreciated on this one, please ...

ROUND 6, 13th October - The Hague Grand Finale &  Brendan Maloney Cup
All Gaelic Football Teams in Europe are invited to The Hague on 13th October for The Grand Finale of the First Gents' Gaelic Football European League, which has seen teams from Luxembourg, Guernsey, Rennes, Brest, Paris, Munich, Barcelona and The Hague compete in the first year of this League. This event will combine with the 5th Annual Brendan Maloney Gaelic Football tournament, in which the European teams and some invited Irish GAA Clubs take part, St. Margarets returning from Ireland to defend the title they won last year.

All starting at 11:00, 13th October 2001, Hague Rugby Club Ground.  The Tournament is 11-a-side.

INVITE FROM Irish Club Netherlands

Dear GAA Friends,

Grand Finale of the First Gent’s Gaelic Football European League  &

5th  Brendan Maloney Memorial Gaelic Football Tournament

1st. Ladies Gaelic Football Tournament

13 October 2001, Hague Rugby Club Ground

It gives me great pleasure to return the courtesy shown our unit by Rennes, Paris, Guernsey, Luxembourg and Brussels units, (each kindly hosted the other five rounds of the first European Men’s Gaelic Football League), by formally inviting your units / teams to participate and attend the grand finale.  Also, I wish to welcome back St. Margaret’s to defend the Brendan Maloney Cup, hopefully it will stay this side of the North Sea for 2001/2.  I know full well some of the units listed will be unable to bring a team but if you feel like coming yourself feel free to do so.  This is a reminder that we do not have as much time after the holidays this year since this event has been brought forward by five weeks from previous years.  This was a decision taken at the European Annual General Meeting in January 2001

We are having the first ladies Gaelic Football Tournament in many years on the same day with the hope that in 2002 we can also run a League for the ladies.  Men’s and womens event will be 11 a-side teams as agreed at the AGM.  This event will again be in the local Hague Rugby club so not Amsterdam for the people who think they are coming to Amsterdam.  The Hague has everything that Amsterdam has got but in not such an obvious manner and we have the extra nice parks, forests, beach and places of cultural interest.  It is only about a 30 minutes train ride from the airport and there are plenty of nice hotels here also around the beach area and also in the Center of town.  I can forward a list if you are not booking an all in flight/hotel package.

We need to start the day at 11.00 am because of the ladies tournament.  Hopefully both pitches will be playable this time but you never can tell with all the rain we seem to get the last two years which is another reason to make sure we start early.  Referees have been requested from Croke Park and hopefully the International Dimensions people will be represented and maybe some media coverage from Ireland – it was suggested by the Board to Croke Park but no response on this so far.

Final details will be forwarded in the coming weeks after our Annual Sport’s Day which is on 15th. September.  If you need any information in the meantime about anything just pop me an e-mail and I’ll try and answer as quickly as possible. I’m in Ireland from 11-21 August myself but will answer on return.  If something urgent I can be reached most of the time on +353-905-79368.

Look forward to seeing you all in The Hague.  Please let me know ASAP the numbers you hope to bring to our event as this is crucial towards our planning for the meal, presentations and party.

Yours sincerely,

Mary Gavin (Sport’s Officer) Phone No. is +31-70-3541099 (Home)

HURLING MATCH, Sat 23rd June, Langres France.
The Hurling weekend in Langres was a great success. The game itself was of a very high standard, even though it was only eight-a-side.
Paris Gaels defeated Luxembourg by four points. It was extremely hot but
both teams gave their best. Mark Scanlon tipped the scales in Paris' favour in the last five minutes.
The poc fada na hEorpa competition was won by Sean Waters from Galway.

Whilst the hurling was taking place on the rugby pitch, the Luxembourg branch of CCE gave a display of music, song and dance in the town centre. About 300 people stopped to watch and listen to what was, by all accounts, a great concert.

The cultural links with Langres are very tenuous. It was a Celtic centre before the arrival of the Romans and was on the main route south through France. The main connection in the area is with Luxeuil-les-Bains which we visited on Sunday. In Annegray, a small village outside Luxeuil, St. Columbán and his followers established their first monastery. He founded two others, one in Luxeuil and the other in Fontaine. As a result of a number of disputes with the lay authorities Columbán was expelled in 610. He wandered across France, the Rhineland, Switzerland, Austria and northern Italy; eventually he settled at Bobbio in 614.

Every year there is a Hurling match organised for some European City/town which has Irish historic connections. This year the venue is Langres, France. Players from the clubs of continental Europe combine to make the 2 teams for the event. Contact Paris Gaels GAA for details of this years Hurling event.

In addition, sometimes there is a hurling match arranged , during the weekend of each football Round.

Preview Langres & Luxeuil-les-Bains welcome a weekend of European Hurling from 22 to 24 June. Saturday 23rd will feature a premier hurling match, as well as the now annual Poc-Fada na hEorpa.
Organised by the Gaelic Sports Club of Luxembourg Asbl, an annual European Hurling match is staged at some European city with cultural oir historical links to Ireland, a new venue each year. Players arrive from clubs in Ireland, Luxembourg, Germany, Brussels, Netherlands and Paris, plus 'last-minute-recruits' are also very welcome, so anybody turning up on the day will get a game.
This year the game will take place in Langres on the rugby pitch and begins at 15h45.
As a warm-up for the match itself the Poc fada na hEorpa competition will take place at 15h15. A fantastic achievement to have organised this annual event for the past 24 years, the Luxembourg committee must be highly commended.

Anyone interested in taking part, or requiring further details, should contact Liam Egan at: [email protected] or [email protected]

Féile na nÓg Sat 5th May, Brux kids represent Europe
6th July 2001  Brussels Kids represent Europe at Féile na nÓg  On Thursday 5th July, the boys and girls teams teams from Brussels left the European mainland and touched down in Ireland to make their second appearance in  Feile Peil na nOg in Thurles from 6th to 8th July. The team played a number of matches,  recording a historic draw against a Wterford side. The team's matches were watched with interest by President of the GAA Sean McCague, and The Irish Indepenent carried a report on the Brussels Kids tremendous achievements. Well Done to the Brussels Kids for a fantastic achievement on represening the continent at such a major event.

Report here

23/24 June: As part of the preparation for next week's Feile na nGael,  Brussels invited Galway club Corofin/Sylaun to Belgium for the weekend 23/24 June, where we had several, much needed practice matches for the local Brux UnderAge Teams. We thank the Galwegians for travelling in such numbers, 20 kids and 6 adults, and the local organisers Gerry McGovern and John Ludden, plus the rest of the superb committee, as well as the parents of all the kids.

St Patrick's Weekend: On Sunday 18 March, the Brux kids braved very wet weather conditions to play in the EC Sports Centre in Overijse as part of the main family occasion of the Brux-Irish community's annual marking of St Patrick's Day.

On Sun 11 March the Brux kids went back training, thus taking their first step en route to representing Europe for the second successive year in the GAA's Féile Peil na nÓg from 6-8 July next in Thurles (as they did in Dublin last year). They were also out again on Sunday 1 April.

LADIES FOOTBALL

Patricia Hickey has taken the reigns of the Ladies Football development in Europe. Based in Brussels, the ladies in this city hosted 2 matches in 2000 - February and July, where the Brussels Vs Rest of Europe were highly entertaining and closely matched encounters. The ladies in Paris, The Hague, and Luxembourg have been playing on an annual basis at the Blackstuff weekend, since mid-90's.

Last year, Brussels played a challenge match in March, in May they teamed up with Luxembourg and played Paris, and at the end of June hosted the first ever 3-team Ladies Gaelic Football Tournament with Luxembourg, Paris and Brussels. In September the Luxembourg ladies travelled to The Hague to play the new Dutch team, as part of the Irish Sports Day in Netherlands.

In 2000, the ladies from Europe represented the continent at the International Bi-Annual Football festival in Dublin, with representatives on the team from Belgium, Jersey, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. There, they competed against teams from Ireland, UK, US and AustralAsia and, while not winning, certainly put European Ladies GAA on the map. Joe McDonagh applauded their success on RTE TV on Sat night 24 Sept during the All-Ireland Gaelic Football Final preview.

This Year 2002, The European Ladies will again attend the International Event in September, but as a new 4-team European Clubs establish themself, and the European Selection Team plans matches against  established Ladies Football Clubs in Ireland or UK, the European Team is guaranteed to be a much better, fitter, and skillful unit by the time the International event comes around.   Munich has a few ladies also now playing.

Over the past 10 years Ladies have joined men on many Gaelic Football matches, and at most European GAA club training sessions.

Since the formation of the European GAA Board, ladies have held prominent officer positions, and the 'Irish Times' in a January 2000 report, gave special mention to
European GAA : a good example of women and men sitting on the one GAA Board.
- Irish Times - National Forum for Women in Gaelic Games,

2001

The Hague 15th September

Luxembourg travelled to The Hague where a close and exciting match was played as part of the Annual Irish Club Netherlands Sports Day.

Brussels 30th June

Refusing to be upstaged by the men,  Paris ladies won the 3-team Ladies Football event, against Luxembourg and Brussels on June 30th in Belgium. The Final saw a reversal from last-months match.  Paris goals made the difference over Brussels in a 2-4 to 0-5 final,  after Brux had earlier secured a semi-final win over Luxembourg  2-6  to 1-4 . Munich's one lady footballer joined the Paris ranks for the Final match.

Ladies Football Semi-Final:
Brussels 2--6  Luxembourg 1--4

Ladies Football FINAL
Paris (bye to final) 2--4  Brussels 0--5

Luxembourg 26th May:

Brussels Ladies travelled in far greater numbers than Brussels men, arriving with 9 ladies. Paris had a full squad with 11 players. Brussels were short a few players for the 10-a-side match, so experienced campaigners Ann Donnelly (Meath, ex-Paris) and Emma Ni Dhonaill (Donegal, Lux.) came to Brussel's rescue, and helped Brussels in their win over Paris Ladies 1--5 to 1--3. Played in blistering sunshine, this close & entertaining 10-a-side game, was the curtain raiser to the Blackstuff final.

Ladies Football Final
Brussels & Europeans 1--5    Paris 1--3

  Overijse, Belgium, on 18th March

Ladies from Brussels have already played at St.Patrick's Festival in Overijse, Belgium, on 18th March, while Paris ladies have been training hard in preparation for the year's fixtures, and The Hague and Luxembourg also hope to upset the Brussels favourites.
