are introduced to the reader by Rubeus Hagrid in his first "Care of Magical
Creatures" class. The most important in the series is Buckbeak, later known
as Witherwings who injured Draco Malfoy in the class. He was sentenced to
death by the Department of Regulation of Magical Creatures and his execution
was to be performed by Macnair. He was saved from this fate by Harry Potter
and Hermione Granger and became a companion of Sirius Black where they both

positions (the distinction is never made clear) house elves cannot directly
disobey an order given by a member of the family they serve. They also cannot
wear clothes because to be granted clothes by one's family is the only way to
free a house elf from their service to the family. House elves can be inherited
by a non-family member as was demonstrated in Book 6; Harry Potter and the
Half Blood Prince. Most house elves see their connection to the magical family that they serve as the only priority in their lives. For most house elves, being presented with clothes would be a great shame and a traumatic, disgraceful event. Most house elves, wear at most a tea cozy or pillowcase.
