The Quality Gurus
Which One is Right?

These papers were the basis for a presentation that I made in 1995 to the Randolph Quality Forum, a local quality organization in Randolph County, North Carolina. I never finished it...I will work on it as time permits.

The field of Quality Control and Quality Assurance has been guided by individuals that are referred to as "Gurus." These individuals are sometimes treated almost as Gods in the field of Quality. Who are these people? Why are they important? Should we follow just one of them? Should we follow all of them? Should we follow them at all? These are questions that we will attempt to answer.

The history of quality gives three time spans for the Gurus. The first time span goes back two to three hundred years up to the first half of the twentieth century. This time span includes the "Pre Gurus," a group of scientists that mainly did the foundation work in the field of statistics. The second time span started in the 1950s, with the emergence of quality techniques in Japan. The second era contains the men that we commonly refer to as "The Gurus," The third time span is starting today. It is the future of the "quality movement" and it will contain "Post Gurus," these are men like Tom Peters, Steve Covey and Peter Senge.

Tauno Kekale has offered me his view of The Quality Gurus. Check out his opinions at: Tauno Kekale and The Quality Gurus...his opinions are his and not mine, this should be well understood. I reprint them here with his permission...any thoughts that you have on them, I will be glad to pass along!!
