FAST-FACTS:
The Divine Principle

ORIGINS

  • WHAT IS "DIVINE PRINCIPLE"?
The public generally understands the "Divine Principle" as the Holy Book of the Unification Church. This is accurate in a limited sense. In the broader view, "Divine Principle" is not limited to a book of writings that adherents consider sacred, but instead are the very words and laws of God. "Divine Principle" or "Principle" is how God functions, and bases his dealings with man and nature. If something is found not to be in alignment with the "Principle", it is considered "Unprincipled". God only deals with "Principled" beings or actions.

NOTE: For the rest of this section, we will deal with "The Divine Principle" as the Holy Book of the Moonies, or the teachings and revelations of Sun Myung Moon, and not the broader meaning of that term. In other words, this section is about: "The Divine Principle Book"

  • AUTHOR OF THE DIVINE PRINCIPLE:
The Moonies ultimately believe that God is the author of the Divine Principle. The Book itself lists no author, but Mr. Hyo-won Eu, who was the first president of the Unification Church is generally believed to have put the words down on paper as a unified text, becoming the Divine Principle book. It is claimed that his writing was the result of personal notes as well as transcribed dictation of Sun Myung Moon's sermons and revelations. In other words, Mr. Hyo Won Eu wrote the words that Moon spoke, and it is claimed that Rev. Moon also checked over Hyo Won Eu's work at every stage to insure it's accuracy.

  • WHEN IT WAS WRITTEN: 1951-1952
After Moon's liberation from Tong Nee Concentration Camp (Hung Nam Prison) he built a small crude hut out of mud and discarded Budweiser Beer cases, where he began teaching the Divine Principle to his followers and holding church services. For one year, between 1951 and 1952 the teachings were written and organized into the Divine Principle. The English "Divine Principle" was first published on September 25th, 1956. The Korean Version: "Wolli Haesol" or "Explanation of the Principle" was published on August 15th, 1957.
