National Master Shane Matthews finished atop a strong field to take the 2005 Jamaica Open Chess Championship at the Hotel Four Seasons on Monday.
Matthews, who is a seven-time National Champion, took the Jamaica Open title from a field of over 60 players including eight Master players. He finished unbeaten with 5 points from 6 games after securing a last round draw with Equitable Brown.
Second place went to FIDE Master Warren Elliott who also ended on 5 points, but was relegated to second on tie-break. Third was shared between Equitable Brown and National Master Duane Rowe who both ended on 4½ points.
The female tournament was won by Melisha Smith, who finished ahead of her sister Annesha who took second place.
The section for players rated under-1800 saw three competitors ending on top with 5 points. Glenmuir High’s Walter Williams was adjudged the winner on tie-break ahead of schoolmate Onaje Lamont who took second, while third went to Hakim Buchanan of Ardenne High.
The tournament was sponsored by CB Traders and Hotel Four Seasons.
The next Open Chess Tournament on the Jamaica Chess Federation calendar, is Clarendon Open scheduled to take place on November 19 and 20 in May Pen, Clarendon. Details will be announced soon.
