National Master Shane Matthews finished atop a strong field to take the 2005 Jamaica Open Chess Championship at the Hotel Four Seasons on Monday.

Matthews, who is a seven-time National Champion, took the Jamaica Open title from a field of over 60 players including eight Master players. He finished unbeaten with 5 points from 6 games after securing a last round draw with Equitable Brown.

Second place went to FIDE Master Warren Elliott who also ended on 5 points, but was relegated to second on tie-break. Third was shared between Equitable Brown and National Master Duane Rowe who both ended on 4½ points.

The female tournament was won by Melisha Smith, who finished ahead of her sister Annesha who took second place.

The section for players rated under-1800 saw three competitors ending on top with 5 points. Glenmuir High’s Walter Williams was adjudged the winner on tie-break ahead of schoolmate Onaje Lamont who took second, while third went to Hakim Buchanan of Ardenne High.

The tournament was sponsored by CB Traders and Hotel Four Seasons.
