| This is one of the prominent landmarks
on the approaches to Southampton port. It lies
the Eastern Shores of Southampton Water between Southampton and the River
Hamble
The domed tower forms part of a hospital
chapel which now used as a museum and visitors centre.
It was originally the centrepiece of a
huge Victorian hospital built in the aftermath of the Crimean war as a
result of pressure from the public, Queen Victoria and Florence Nightingale.
The hospital had its own pier jutting
out into Southampton water and was even served by its own Railway branch
line. The nearby town of Netley grew to support the huge establishment.
The Hospital has been demolished and the
and site now forms the Royal Victoria Country Park with the Great dome
its centre piece. |
