A Place in fiction  
Dr Watson of the Sherlock Holmes stories was trained here. Netley is mentioned in the first line of the first book "A study in scarlet"  

"In the year 1878 I took my degree of Doctor of Medicine of the University of   
London, and proceeded to Netley to go through the course prescribed for surgeons in the army" copyright The Complete Works Publishing Company, 1991  

Not as the Nurse ordered  
Although Florence Nightingale fought hard to have the Hospital built she was not happy with the design. She considered that it was designed to impress visitors more than for the health of the patients.  

Home of the Victoria cross   
Under the foundation stone was discovered the prototype Victoria cross.Placed there by Queen Victoria at the Hospitals building.

1856 Foundation stone laid by Queen Victoria  

1863 Hospital completed   

1899 Netley is busy with Boer war casualties.  

1900 Queen Victoria made her last of many visits to the Hospital. She lived for much of her reign across the water at Osborne house 

1900 A branch line is opened to the Hospital and a station built.  

1914 WW1 leads to an expansion with the building of hutted hospitals in the grounds.Over 50,000 patients passed through the hospital before the war was over.  

1939 Hospital was again busy with the Dunkirk evacuation.  

1944 The Americans take over the main Hospital, they will treat about 68,000 casualties by the end of 1945.  

1966 Hospital demolished after being allowed to fall into disuse and following a major fire. Only the Chapel with its Dome remained.   

1980 Royal Victoria Country park opened
