Computing to the MAX

First, I will give you reasons why you should follow this guide.

1. You will increase your internet speed.
2. You will increase your computer speed, which means faster loading, game playing, loading of internet pages etc.
3. Your computer will have better security, which means no private credentials being sent to another person, a very low chance of your computer being hacked and an even lower chance of catching a computer virus.
4. Greater management over your computer.
5. Faster, easier navigation.

Convinced yet? Well, you should be.

Anyway, the first step should have been something you have already done:
1. Read what is spyware and spyware removal. Get familiar with the spyware blacklist.

2. Get an antivirus program. I recommend Norton Antivirus 2002 or 2003.

3. Get a firewall. I recommend Norton Personal Firewall 2002 or 2003.

4. VERY IMPORTANT! Even if you have a antivirus program or a firewall, UPDATE IT!

That means run LiveUpdate at least once or twice a week! The reason why I prefer Norton stuff is that they keep updating their virus definitions/program every week. This makes it much safer and LiveUpdate is easy to use.

5. Turn your firewall settings to the max.

That means max reporting, unused port blocking, etc. DO NOT just leave the firewall alone after installing it. IT IS NOT A genie, it will not read your mind and do what you want. You have to configure it properly!

6. Scan your computer at least once or twice a month with an antivirus program.

7. Do not open strange emails from people who you do not know.

This is because most emails are sent from advertising companies and they earn money each time you open their email or click on their links.
Some emails are also sent by mass mailing trojans and when you open it, boom, you get infected!

A way to tell if the email could possibly be dangerous is to see the size of the email. Usually, if it more than 100kb, it could be a virus, although some viruses are smaller than 100kb.

Another way is to note the email title. If it says "hello" and is from someone you do not know, and the file size is bigger than 10kb, delete it. Chances are, it is an advertising email or a prank email.

Also, if the email is named Fwd: *a person's name* (replace with any name) then delete it. A virus is probably sending this crap.

If an email's title is "how to remove *any name* virus" or it has words like "attached is a program to remove *any name* virus from your computer", delete it. There is a 99% chance that it is sent by a virus. Virus makers are very tricky and cunning.

More coming soon
