Bandar Seri Begawan - The Ministry of Education always emphasises on the importance of mathematics and science subjects in all stages of education. Teaching and learning should not only be restricted to the classroom and textbooks, for there are many other sources of getting information, including through the convenience of ICT. With the use of the Internet, schools and teachers can network with other schools worldwide. This was highlighted by Dr Hj Mahali bin Hj Momin, head director of education at the Ministry of Education, during an awards ceremony for the National Science and Mathematics Olympiad, as well as the Brunei Environment, Science and Technology (BEST) Awards held yesterday at the Royal Berkshire, Jerudong Park Country Club. Over the past three years, STEP Centre with the cooperation of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd, has successfully organised National Olympiads for primary, secondary and tertiary levels. For the primary schools two Olympiads, namely Primary School Science Olympiad (PSSO) and Primary School Science Olympiad (PSMO), will be to Primary Five and Six students below 12 years old by Oct 30, 2007. The Olympiads have attracted about 340 students throughout the country, a significant increase in participation from last year. Meanwhile, Secondary School Science Olympiad (SSSO), on the other hand, was initiated based on the country's participation in the first International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) held in Jakarta in Dec 2004. Recently, the newly introduced project for BEST Awards has attracted 112 students from 20 secondary schools across the nation.
