May 2005 Newsletter

WOW! Our Summer Fun model show was a giant success! Everyone did so well. We had lots of positive comments from the judge about how creative and professional everyone was. I was really proud of the way each member conducted themselves and showed great sportsmanship toward each other. This was our judges first time judging a model show and I think she was impressed with how much work and attention to detail goes into model horses. Hopefully she will be the first on our list of model horse judges and will encourage other professional judges to try our hobby.

As part of her club project, Mary is making and selling model tack. Her tack is really nice and received lots of compliments at the show. If you know anyone who would be interested in purchasing model tack, please contact Evelyn or myself. A new saddle or bridle would make a great birthday or holiday gift.

The horse sale went well. We did three community service projects at once as well as participated as part of the local National Youth Service Days project. Almost all our candy is gone for the year. The girls did a scavenger hunt and had their photos taken with country singer, Johnny U. Johnny helped us kick off our new Abaco Barb Youth Project and the group photo is being used to promote the project.

Our May meeting will be on the 18th at the Commissioners Annex from 1:30 to 3 p.m. This will be a busy meeting as we have some demonstrations to get done and, since this is Triple Crown month, Ken Beller will be coming to talk about race horses. We also need to be out on time as several of us have dog 4-H right after the model meeting. If your daughter is in the dog project, she needs to do her dog demonstration at her general club meeting so they can do it at the model club, but it needs to be done soon.

I need to set a date for the June meeting, possibly around the week of the 13th. Id like to do a 2 or 3 hour meeting in June to be sure record books and everything are ready before fair. All demonstrations need to be done by this date! Members have had at least 6 months to do this. I will also be handing out fresh record books and any photos and hand-outs that I have. We will be using the time to copy the information that should be in your daughters books up until now, into fresh, clean books. I will also be signing off the check-off lists. I would like to have the books completely finished by the end of this meeting. They can be turned in that day or no later than July 30th. I know this seems early, but time will really start flying after school lets out and I know several members are in other projects. So the quicker we get ours done, the better.

As for July, I dont know what the horse group is doing, but if the model group wants to do something for the Salmon River Days parade, Im game. We have a flatbed and the girls can decorate that. I just need to know ASAP. Also if they want to do some type of booth for a few hours after the parade, we can do that, too. If any members want to get together and have a tack making session, that can be arranged. I know the younger girls would like to make Western saddles and Id be happy to do that. I know July will be a busy month for every one so I need to know if you want a formal meeting or just a get together of who ever wants to do some tack making. Please let me know by the May meeting.

CAMPS **** I will be at the state horse camp in Alpine, WY July 12th 16th. This is a fun camp and everyone is eligible to go with or without their horses. Also the Salmon Horse Camp will be July 24th 27th. ALL MODEL HORSE CLUB MEMBERS ARE ELIGIBLE TO ATTEND THE SALMON HORSE CAMP. If interested in this camp or the state camp, check early with the 4-H Office to get an application.

There is also a general 4-H camp on July 12-15 at the Boulder Mountain Youth Camp. Check with the 4-H Office for information on this event. Something new this year is several one-day project camps for members 11 years old and up. The projects will be rocketry, cake decorating, scrapbooking and sewing. Check with the 4-H Office for info.

August will also be a busy month. I will be at the Custer County Fair Aug. 1st 6th.  We should have a quick last-minute, fair prep meeting after that. For fair, members are also encouraged to do a scene for our club display. The scenes will be judged. We have 5-gallon aquariums to cover the models so they arent disturbed. These will be provided. The scenes must fit in that space. We also have a free-standing case that houses our general club display and anything the girls want to add. Since our Capella model was introduced this year, Id like to have a special display on the club and our projects. So the girls need to be thinking up what they want to do and we will meet one evening before fair to set things up. Im not sure right now when we are scheduled to do that. We also need to do a club poster. I have a collection of photos and things from throughout the year that the girls can use to make the poster.

Also at the fair is the speech and demonstration contest. I highly encourage all club members to try this. Last year the club was well represented as all three members entered and did very well.

As for the Abaco Barb Youth Project, that should be officially launched by June 1st. Several press releases have been sent to national publications and websites. Weve had several new contacts and lots of interesting ideas are bouncing around.

And, more good news. Diane has received several calls about starting model clubs and some are already forming. Dianes goal is to have a state model show at the Blackfoot fair and it looks like it might just happen in a few more years as more folks learn about our projects and clubs. Hopefully we will have a model project display there this year. We spotted a neat cabinet that we can close in with heavy clear plastic so we can put the models safely on display and Diane has a special glass case she made for her clubs display.

Finally, or basically thats all I can think of for now, enclosed is a list of things your daughter need to finish on her check-off list. Most everyone is very close to being finished. Some of the things need to be done at home, like read a book or watch a video. Please encourage and help her to finish these requirements before the June meeting.

If they are in the horse club, they can do the same demonstration for the model club and the horse club. They just have to do it at both club meetings. And, since they would have had so much practice, they could do it at the fair, too!

Please call me if you cant attend any of these events, my phone number is 756-3182.
