January 2007 Newsletter

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Hope everyone had a good holiday season. It sure was a busy month for the club. We delivered the baskets to the Discovery Care Center. They looked great. Our bake sale was a big success. We made $110 profit, thats after the girls selected a card from the Christmas is Sharing tree and purchased a cute little pink jacket for a toddler girl. I was very proud of everyone. They did a great job and we received lots of nice compliments. For those who couldnt attend the bake sale, we will be doing another fundraiser for them later this year as participating in a fundraiser is one of the 4-H club requirements.

NEXT MEETING:
Our next meeting will on January 26th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The meeting is later in the month because Diane, Katie Hoffman and I will be at the Western Regional Leaders Forum in Phoenix, AZ. This will be an all day activity meeting with lunch.
The girls decided on Subway sandwiches so if anyone wants to bring juice or other snacks, that would be great. This will be a busy active day as we have lots to accomplish. We will be making tack, taking photos and hopefully Dallas Dupree will be our guest speaker to teach the girls about Native American horse costumes. They chose this topic as their theme for their fair scene. Everyone needs to bring the models they plan to show, and any tack or photo props to this meeting so we can see what they will be using for the model show. Also, we will be doing photos for the Breyer Just About Horses Holiday photo cover contest for next year. Please bring any in-scale holiday items you might have. I need to check on the availability of the library basement for the next meeting and will let you know when I find out the date.

CLUB MODEL SHOW:
We need to set the date for our club Model Show ASAP. It needs to be on a Friday in April or May.
The horse sale is April 20th 21st. When is Spring break? We could do it the Friday before the break starts. Any suggestions?

PHOTO SHOW:
Our photos are safely in Canada with the 4-H Club up there. When they get their photos ready, we will judge them.

WELCOME TO SALMON:
The Extension Office is co-hosting a Welcome to Salmon get together on January 23 from 4 to 7 at the Elks Lodge.
The event will host a variety of local organizations, services and opportunities and even those who have lived in Salmon for many years are invited to attend and learn about all the new services, programs and activities in the area. I will be helping with the 4-H booth. If any member would like to come help, it would be appreciated. It should be a fun event.

OTHER TOPICS:

DEMONSTRATIONS:
Please encourage your daughter to get her demonstration done early this year. They need to be done before the model horse show that will be in late April or early May. They also need to do a book, movie or magazine article report. We will be discussing the Flicka movie so that will count for the movie requirement. I will be scheduling them at this meeting if no one offers to do them.

ABACO BARB YOUTH PROJECT:
Mimi is trying to raise enough funds, about $500, to purchase a special sonogram machine so they can preg check the mares. Therefore, one of our clubs supporters has pledged to donate an original finish Peter Stone Ideal Stock Horse Model to be awarded in a special drawing from a pool of names of those Youth Project participants who host a fundraiser geared specifically towards the purchase of the sonogram machine. If any of the girls would like to do this on their own so they can qualify for the drawing, please let me know. Details are on the club website. Juanita has done a ton of updates and revisions on the site so check it out. Also, the new project check-off lists are there. Thanks Juanita!

Also, the Abaco Barbs will be featured in the February issue of Horse Illustrated. You can get a copy at Saveway. This article should really help draw attention to the horses.

IDAHO HORSE OF THE YEAR:
Jim Wilson, an Extension Educator from northern Idaho is working out the legal details with a representative of the Stone Horse Company for the Stone Horse IHOTY Program and we should have the details available for announcement soon.

NEW EXTENSION OFFICE WEBSITE:
The Lemhi County Extension Office now has its own website that will have all kinds of information on Extension topics and the 4-H program in general. The address is http://extension.ag.uidaho.edu/lemhi/

Thats all I can think of for now. If you have any questions, please call me.

If anyone can bring refreshments to the meetings, it would be appreciated. We would need enough for at least 12 people.
