Quds Day iftar program

Posted: October 5, 2007

Shajaratun Muntazirah Educational and Research Institute's (SMERI) Education Bureau held a simple semi-open iftar (breaking of the fast) program yesterday to mark today's International Quds Day.

The program consisted of film showing, photo and book exhibits and an informal roundtable discussion participated by more than 20 discussants.

As the time of maghrib arrived, the invitees held their maghribayn prayers in congregation, and joined together in a typical iftar meal.

The roundtable lasted until 10 pm. Five attendees, however, stayed at SMERI Library to perform Laylat al-Qadr night vigil.

In August 1979 Imam Khomeini declared the last Friday of Ramadan as "International Quds Day", calling upon all Muslims of the globe to express their support to the Palestinian struggle for self-determination.

SMERI acquires top multi-language learning software program

Posted: March 16, 2007

Shajaratun Muntazirah Educational and Research Institute (SMERI) recently acquires a multi-language learning software program.

Rosetta Stone program is designed to teach a new language the way the first language is learned: by directly associating with words--written and spoken--with objects, actions and ideas that convey meaning. Using pictures to establish the meaning of words and phrases so that there is no translation, Rosetta Stone teaches grammar, syntax and vocabulary through real-life examples.

Using Dynamic Immersion, a method that simulates a real-life immersion experience and relies on the learner's action participation, Rosetta Stone teaches all lessons in the target language, quickly developing his ability to understand the spoken and written language. Tasks and activities keep the learner involved in the learning process as Speaking and Writing Exercises help him develop correct pronunciation and spelling.

The primary goal of Rosetta Stone method is two-fold: to help the learner learn a language quickly, easily and correctly, and to equip him with the strategies and confidence that will aid his understanding and communication in the real world.

Rosetta Stone is the #1 language-learning software in the world, used successfully by millions of people in 150 countries. It’s been adopted by government agencies and corporations—including Deutsche Telekom, IBM, and Lockheed Martin—and thousands of schools and universities around the world.

The software program includes the following languages:

- Arabic

- Chinese (Mandarin)

- Danish

- Dutch

- English (UK)

- English (US)

- Farsi (Persian)

- French

- German

- Greek

- Hebrew

- Hindi

- Indonesian

- Italian

- Japanese

- Korean

- Latin

- Pashto

- Polish

- Portuguese (BR)

- Russian

- Spanish (Latin America)

- Spanish (Spain)

- Swahili

- Swedish

- Tagalog (Filipino)

- Thai

- Turkish

- Vietnamese

- Welsh

The program is expected to be of immense benefit to SMERI in its Education Bureau's Foreign Languages Department where English, Arabic, Persian, and Malay/Indonesian are to be taught in the near future, insha' Allah.
