The Caged Girl
This unique trapeze act tells the true story of the house Asphyxia built when she was 22. Conveyed through original song lyrics and poetic Deaf sign language, the story is accompianied by trapeze skills which form a visual, metaphorical presentation. The process of building her house becomes a metaphor for the escape from the cages we all live in, though not all of us realise we hold the key.
The Caged Girl is an eight minute solo swinging trapeze act which incorporates the use of poetic sign language and graceful trapeze movements. It tells the story of the house Asphyxia built herself, combining ethereal music, song lyrics and sign language, with the strength of her physical performance skills to create an original and unusual piece.
The performance begins with static trapeze movements symbolic of a bird imprisoned behind bars, representing the cages that we all live in, trapped by the choices we have made and uncertain about which life path to pursue. But upon realising she holds the key to her own future, Asphyxia works pushing the swing higher and higher until it is almost horizontal, where dynamic and exciting swinging skills form a metaphor for building her house, building her life.
A static trapeze version of The Caged Girl is also available, which may suit some events as it requires lower rigging points and is cheaper than the swinging version.
Rigging and Venue
The rigging points need to be at least 7.5 metres high, and a clear performance area of at least four metres in front of the trapeze and another four metres behind the trapeze is required. Sky Works does not provide rigging - this can be organised by your event, or Sky Works can negotiate on your behalf with Show Tech, a rigging company. Rigging costs are dependent on venue and requirements, and can start at around AUS$500 up to AUS$20,000 and beyond. An eight metre arch constructed on a hard surface such as a bitument road costs around AUS$1,500 and would be suitable for The Caged Girl.
Lighting
The Caged Girl can be performed in daylight with no special lighting, or in a darkened venue accompianied by three colour mood lighting and a follow spot.
Sound
Music is provided on CD and requires an adequate P.A. system to be provided by your event.
Rehearsal
Time must be allocated prior to the event for a technical run through and rehearsal. In addition, suitable facilities with a toilet, sink and mirror must be provided for warm up and costume change.
Static Version
The rigging points need to be at least 4.5 metres high, and a performance area of two metres in front of and behind the trapeze is needed. The music is provided on cassette tape.
