Hoopla Queen

Hoopa Queen is a glittering five minute solo hula hoop extravaganza, suitable for corporate functions, cabaret events, nightclubs, parties and festivals. Asphyxia performs to an original song by Jennie Swain, which tells the story of a young Deaf girl as she grows up. Spinning hoops around every part of her body, Asphyxia flexes herself into a variety of amazing and beautiful positions. The hoops spin faster and faster around her legs, hips, waist, neck and arms as she performs sign language in time to the lyrics of the music. This performance is suitable for nightclubs, caberet events, corporate functions, parties and festivals.

Like A Virgin

Hoopla Queen is the new and updated version of Asphyxia’s simpler hula hoop act, performed with two hoops to Madonna's "Like A Virgin", which may be more suited to some situations. Asphyxia enters the stage wrapped in a glittering cloak, spinning a hoop around her wrist. She reveals to the audience her pink and white feathered costume underneath as the cloak falls to the floor and the momentum gains. The hoops spin faster and faster around her legs, hips, waist, neck and arms as she performs sign language in time to the lyrics of the music.

Review

Asphyxia’s debut performance of this act at the sell-out Hot August Night’s caberet dinner was written up by Rachel Cook on the front page of the MCV newspaper: "Which brings me to the highlight of the night: Asphyxia, a deaf hoola-hoopist, who performed ’Like a Virgin’. It was mesmerizing, hilarious, quirky and brilliant." The entire act was also televised at the conclusion of Channel 31’s Bent TV the following week.

Technical Requirements

  • A stage space of at least 3 x 3 metres is required for the full show. This must be cleared of microphones and other instruments and props.
  • When performing outdoors, note that windy and or very bright and sunny conditions can make it difficult to spin the hoops,, and so in the event of unsuitable weather the performance may need to be cancelled at short notice or transferred to an indoor venue.
  • Event organisers must provide a CD player, electricity for it, and someone to operate the sound.
  •

    Change Room Requirements

  • A clear space of at least 3 x 3 metres is needed to warm up. This must be unobstructed by tables, chairs and other furniture, and must not be a walk-way through which others will pass during the warm up period.
  • The warm up space must be out of public view and reasonably private as only skimpy clothing can be worn while warming up hula hoops!
  • The changing room (which may be separate from the warm up space) also needs to be out of sight from the audience. A toilet room which is shared by audience members is not suitable.
  • The changing room and warm up space must be within 40 metres of the performance space and must be sufficiently secure to safely leave clothing, bags and make-up there during the performances.
  • Access to toilet and sink facilities with a mirror is needed. These need to be accessible from the changing room without walking through the audience.
  • The change room etc must be accessible one hour before the first show.
  • A change room shared with other performers is fine, but please consider whether there will be enough space to warm up the hula hoops without inconveniencing the other performers.
