Relationship Between Father and Daughter

      There are many kinds of relationship in a society. Relationship between father and daughter has special meaning, not only the meaning of blood. Usually, fathers feel more affection toward their daughter and the daughters, too. However, this special relationship could be crossed or realized by an unexpected moment. There are two literatures about this relationship. One is Carson McCullers¡¯s novel; The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter. The other one is an essay on a magazine, ¡°No More Lollipops.¡± Both literature elements discuss the typical relationship of father and daughter. These daughters realize their fathers¡¯ feeling from the fathers¡¯ out-looking or reaction.
      The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter of McCullers is a novel of lives, thoughts, and relationships of several characters in a town. Theme of relationship between father and daughter comes under a girl character, Mick Kelly. During summer vacation, Mick is busy to take care of her little brothers, think, listen to the music, and make plans for her future. She loves the music, but her family is not rich enough to have a radio or any musical instrument. Every night, she goes to her rich neighborhood. And she sits in bushes and listens the music secretly. One day, her dad calls her. She is in a big hurry, but she goes to him. Dad calls her for a no reason. Mick realizes that her dad is lonesome. Dad used to be a carpenter and a painter. However, he could not work, just like before because of an accident. He could not earn enough money for his family. His position in the family is losing gradually. She could not leave her dad alone, even though she knows that he calls her for nothing. She feels very sorry for him. That feeling makes her stay with her dad for a while.
      The other literature is an essay that is titled ¡°No More Lollipops.¡± The relationship between the author and her father was special. When Debra - the author of this essay- was very young, her father made a loud sound on the top stairs to let her could hear. She ran to him right away and climbed onto his shoulders. He pretended that he did not know she was coming down. That made her more exciting. They went down together and had good time. One day, she stopped to go down. Even though, she does not remember when it was. Then, she was no longer her daddy¡¯s little girl. She and her father got far off gradually. They did not hug and kiss any more. This change hurts both her and her father. Their relationship was changed by an unexpected moment. The author wishes that she could go back that time to act and express feeling frankly.

These two Mick¡¯s father and Debra¡¯s father are similar. They feel loneliness in their family. This happening changed the father¡¯s positions relationship in their families. This changes affects their personalities, too. They have no more confidences and liveliness. However, these fathers are also different. Mick¡¯s father loses his opportunity to work. Therefore, he cannot earn much money. He loses his position as the head of a family actually. His action, such as trying to talk to Mick, shows his loneliness. In Debra¡¯s father¡¯s case, he does not get close his daughter since Debra stopped to come down. He lost his confidence about his daughter. And he does not hug or kiss his daughter. It shows that he feels uncomfortable for his daughter.

       These two literatures are about the relationship between father and daughter. Mick and her father in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and Debra and her father in ¡°No More Lollipops¡± represent this relationship. There are similarities and differences between two fathers at same time. Each one of the fathers has different causes or reactions, but both of them feel loneliness from their families. Two daughters realize their father¡¯s problems from the fathers¡¯ behaviors before any others notice. It is the special relationship between father and daughter. Father and daughter have some kind of mental rapport. They miss when they are lonely. And they feel sorry for anthers when another¡¯s are lonely. These literatures help to understand the relationship between father and daughter.
