INTRODUCTION
Anyone that has had the good fortune of
playing Warhammer 40,000 has had at one point wanted to be a Space Marine
holding out against a rushing horde of Tyranids with nothing but faith and a
bolter to protect you. Or perhaps you wanted to play as a massive Ork with a
powerfist who could crunch through Space Marine power armour like a
sledgehammer through tinfoil. Maybe the Eldar are your thing, and the idea of
an all-seeing being with the capacity to intuit the future from all the
possible paths attracts you. Maybe when the Tau came out you became obsessed
with the Greater Good of the universe, or perhaps you’d rather be a Kroot
mercenary selling your fighting prowess to the highest bidder. It is possible
that you wanted to play the more obscure characters that hold the Imperium
together but get no recognition in games – the Navigators, the Astropaths, the
Adeptus Arbiters or members of the Administratum. Since its inception in the
early “Rogue Trader” edition of Warhammer 40,000 the game has developed a rich
and exciting history filled with heroic deeds and frightening foes.
Anyone that has had the good fortune of
playing Dungeons and Dragons or any of the many other Role-Playing Games
available knows what it is like to fully immerse yourself in a world. To play a
character and get lost in the intricacies of another planet, another species,
another time. Most notably, Wizards of the Coast have designed the d20 system to
be the most universally compatible role-playing system. Moreover, they have even
gone so far as to make it openly available for anyone to use. With the help of
the System Reference Documents for various d20 games I have been able to put together
a single cohesive d20-40k roleplaying package so you don’t have to constantly
flip between books. The d20 Modern game mechanics supported by d20 Future seem
the most flexible and perhaps the most easily adaptable to this setting. With
this in mind I hope to bring together Warhammer 40,000 and the flexibility of
the d20 system to allow for a gaming experience that no fan of the setting will
ever forget.
The broad character classes of the d20
Modern game are without stereotype so it seems that it is just as fitting to
play a Dedicated Space Marine Hero (an Apothecary) as it would be to play an
Intelligent Hero (Librarian), Strong Hero (Veteran Marine with Bolt Pistol and
Chainsword), Fast Hero (Scout), Charismatic Hero (Chaplain) or a Tough Hero
(Squad Flamer). In fact aside from weapon and racial rules it is extremely easy
to pick up a d20 Modern book and play a Warhammer 40,000 role-playing game
right away. This handbook should allow you to seamlessly play role-playing
games in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. If you don’t like the way I’ve
converted something from one game to the other feel free to change it. After
all, it is your game not mine.
