The two-year-old boy shown above is a first generation American, actually, a first generation Chicagoan. He was born in 1911 to two Norwegian emigrants. He is my father.
My grandfather, HANS ANDREAS HANSEN, was born in Eidanger, Telemark, Norway, on December 26, 1869.
My grandmother, KAREN MARKUSDATTER OLSEN, was also from Telemark. She was born January 31, 1879, on the Skotmyr farm near Kragerų.
Both of my grandparents emigrated to the United States and Chicago in the early 1900s. My grandfather came between 1901 and 1904, going to Chicago where his sister lived. My grandmother emigrated in 1903, arriving in New York aboard the Hellig Olav on May 18; she continued to Chicago to an uncle's home there.
