Recent excavations at the 9,000 year old site of Çatalhöyük in Central Turkey have uncovered thousands of clay balls and geometric objects. Theories related to the use of these objects are numerous - some bizarre, others comical. Were the clay balls used for hunting, cooking, counting, children's toys? Some have even claimed they were used to aid digestion! This talk will present the recent research carried out on the clay balls and objects by Dr. Atalay, and provide you with the latest evidence used to help us understand the use and significance of these objects in daily life at Çatalhöyük.

Sonya Atalay received her Phd from UC Berkeley in 2003 for her work on the clay materials at Çatalhöyük, Turkey. Her research interests include clay analysis, prehistoric foodways and cooking practices, Indigenous Archaeology, and Combining Native American (Ojibwe) Epistemologies with Western concepts of science. She continues her work on cooking practices in Neolithic Turkey and has also recently started a new collaborative project with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe in Michigan to explore cooking practices before and after European contact.
