Internship Opportunity with the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group

Wanted:
Interns willing to work for free, two days a week or more for at least a few months.

Interns will be doing a wide variety of policy-related activities, which may include:
  • Legislative and Regulatory Issue Tracking
  • Preparation of Issue Briefs and Comments
  • Dialogs with Legislators, Agency Leaders and Staff regarding current legislation or regulatory development
  • Coordinate and staff SVMG Committee meetings
  • Collaborate in event planning
  • Research and write environment-related reports on current issues in Silicon Valley and California
  • Assist SVMG members through issue or information resource research

This is a great opportunity to network within the local and state government and policy-making communities and the environmental communities (corporate, NGO, and regulatory). Interns will get hands-on experience with policy research, writing, communications, event organization and planning, and up-close and personal interaction with current environmental regulatory and policy issues impacting Silicon Valley and the state - and the people working on those issues.

Env/Ecol Anth Summer Internships

National Marine Fisheries Service, Northeast Fisheries Science Center, Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The Social Science Branch is seeking 2 interns for summer 2004. See below for details:

Human Dimensions of Marine Resource Use and Conservation
One of the objectives of the Social Science Branch is to better understand the human dimensions of marine resource use and conservation through primary and secondary data collection and analysis. Two summer interns are needed to assist in the development of information related to these social and cultural aspects. A broad range of possible tasks is associated with these positions.

Final choice of tasks will depend on the interests and qualifications of the individual interns. Tasks may include but are not limited to: 1) Carry out literature reviews and enter them in a bibliography database (Endnote or Procite), 2) Develop and design a web page for the unit, 3) Assist in development and design of a community profiles database and associated web page, and 4) carry out fieldwork on fishing communities in the Northeast region: interviewing, transcription, text analysis. Interest in and coursework completed in the social sciences (e.g., anthropology, sociology, marine policy, human geography but not economics), particularly the relationship between resource users and ocean resources is essential. Also, experience with word processing, spreadsheets, web editing is required. Graduate student preferred, but advanced undergraduate possible with appropriate coursework and references.
