Sonic is thankful that he managed to throw the grenade at the skylight, saving everyone. He helps Sally to her feet and makes sure that the other freedom fighters are okay. Sonic is furious that Nate has been kidnapped, but his speech is interrupted by a deer who is upset at the damage to her juice bar. The deer does not care about Nate and says she will tell the secret service. The freedom fighters leave to head straight for Castle Acorn.

When the freedom fighters arrive, Geoffrey St. John has finished stating that he believes that the prisoners died in the ocean. Sally tells her father that Nate has been kidnapped, and Sonic adds that Snively, along with the other escaped prisoners, kidnapped Nate. Geoffrey refuses to believe that the prisoners attacked the freedom fighters. Sonic does not care about Geoffrey's views and is only concerned for Nate. King Acorn is shocked that the prisoners could reach Mobotropolis quickly, and Doctor Quack appears to state that the malnourished prison guards informed him that there was a third shuttle. Prince Elias believes that the prisoners escaped to the closest island to the Devil's Island. Sonic asks the freedom fighters if they are ready to go, and King Acorn objects. The king believes that children do not need to fight since the war is over and officially disbands the freedom fighters. The secret service is ordered to investigate the situation.

At night, the secret service leaves a submarine and takes a raft to the cliffs of Big Kahuna island. The team scales the cliffs to reach West Robotropolis and when they reach the top they find Sonic waiting for them. Geoffrey protests, saying that Sonic is violating the king's orders. Sonic says that he is acting as a free agent since the freedom fighters are no more.

Inside the city in the old courthouse, Snively asks Nate to join him. Nate is bound in stocks and refuses.

As the secret service and Sonic walk through the streets, Sonic thinks he hears a sound. Everyone continues walking and soon finds the third shuttle. Geoffrey orders everyone to surround the building to have the enemy surrender. Sonic protests and says they have the element of surprise on their side. Geoffrey says he does not care for Overlanders, especially after the situation with Queen Alicia. Sonic argues that Geoffrey should not blame Nate and then calls him a doofus. Geoffrey takes a swing at Sonic, who quickly dodges the attack and kicks Geoffrey's feet. A voice tells the two to stop. Geoffrey says that he is the commanding officer and then is shocked to find Elias dressed in armor.

Inside the courthouse, Warlord Kodos gives Nate one last chance to join them. When Nate refuses, Kodos holds up his axe. Bomb bounces into the room, his fuse lit. To everyone's surprise, the fuse goes out and nothing happens. The remaining secret service and Sonic burst into the room.

Meanwhile, in outer space, a metallic hand activates the satellite system to locate a target.

Sonic runs around Kodos and hits his legs. Kodos finds his legs going numb and falls to the ground. Sonic frees Nate, and suddenly the ground begins to shake. A robotic squid emerges from the ground and holds Snively in one tentacle and Bomb in another. Bomb's fuse goes off again and there is a huge explosion. Bomb appears by Heavy, unharmed. The secret service arrests some of the prisoners, and Elias calls the mission a success. Sonic adds that he has the parts of Crocbot in his bi-plane. Everyone suddenly looks up to see the bi-plane flying by with some of the prisoners.

Sonic dreams the same dream he has had for many nights. As Sonic files his bi-plane over Sand-Blast City, the plane disappears, and Sonic falls toward a statue of himself that he destroyed (seen in Sonic the Hedgehog #63). Sonic approaches the mouth of the statue that seems to mock him. Usually before he enters the mouth, Sonic wakes up drenched in sweat. However, tonight Sonic is determined to discover how his dream ends. Sonic enters the mouth and continues to dive until he hits the floor.

Sonic finds himself in a world where everything is in his image, including the flowers and the leaves of the trees. A young boy approaches Sonic with a Sonic t-shirt and is shocked to find that he has stumbled upon his hero. The boy explains that Sonic's coming was foretold and then takes him to the Sonic Adventure Archivists. Sonic steps inside the golden door and finds three creatures dressed in white: a human, a walrus, and a horse. The three are excited to see Sonic and says he should be there when they discuss the meaning of his adventures. The human asks why Sonic and Sally are not together, the horse says he does not understand why Sally was revived since she would be a better as a martyr, and the walrus calms the other two down by explaining that Sally's life was extended. The three then say that they love Sonic and he could do no wrong.

The words echo in Sonic's head as he wakes up. Tails walks into his room, and Sonic says he is not sure of the point in being a hero. He left Sand-Blast City open to attack from the Robians, and he will make mistakes. Tails tells Sonic to focus on the lives he has touched and how he is always there for others. Tails says that everything is not all "black and white." Sonic smiles as he puts down a black and white picture of himself, Tails, and Sally. He believes he can become used to being gray.
