Part I:
Antoine, Tails, and Sonic are on a scouting mission to find out what happened to Robotropolis after the earthquake (from the last issue).  Antoine says they should head back before the storm gets worse.  After saying that Antoine is scared, Sonic says that they have collected all the information they need.  Suddenly there is an explosion and combots appear.  Everyone works together to help fight against the combots.  Sonic thinks that they need help when a lightning bolt hits a combot.  The combot explodes and Tails finds Sonic unconscious on the ground.  Antoine sends Tails for help, thinking that Sonic will not survive.

Part II:
Tails, Bunnie, Sally, and Rotor rush to Sonic and find him conscious.  Sonic is ready to fight and starts to run as Sally says he needs an examination and a plan.  Sonic trips and falls to the ground.  He thinks he is a little woozy, but Sonic begins to run again.  Bunnie runs up to Sonic and says hi.  Sonic is amazed and says he didn't know Bunnie had super speed.  Bunnie explains that she doesn't have super speed, just like Sonic.  Tails says that Sonic has lost his speed, and Sonic realizes that he is so slow he can't swat a mosquito.  Rotor develops a theory that the energy powering the combot when it exploded in the electrical storm created anti-inertia and made Sonic lose his speed.  Sonic becomes angry and says that Rotor would be dangerous with two brains.  Sally tells Sonic that Rotor is just trying to help.  Sonic says he knows that Rotor was trying to help and then says that his speed has been a part of his life since he was little.  Sonic's speed was also one of the best weapons when fighting against Robotnik.  Nicole says that the mystic power rings give Sonic extra power, he could, in theory, restore his speed by collecting many rings.

Soon the freedom fighters walk along the outskirts of Knothole, hoping that they have escaped Robotropolis without being detected.  Suddenly combots appear and attack the freedom fighters.  Sonic uses the power ring in his hand as a weapon and throws it at a combot.  The combot explodes and Sonic jumps into a lake.  The combots disappear with the freedom fighters, leaving Sonic to drown in the lake.

Part III:
Penelope (from the Princess Sally mini-series) brings Sonic to the surface.  Sonic said that he dove into the lake at the right time and holds up a power ring.  As Sonic walks out of the water, the freedom fighters trained by Sally (in the Princess Sally mini-series) appear, ready to help.  Sonic explains that he only has one power ring, but they need to go rescue the other freedom fighters.

Later, Sonic and the new freedom fighters meet up with spy network and talk to Fly, Fly Freddy.  Freddy explains that their friends are in Robotnik's secondary lab.  Sonic must walk along a narrow maintenance pathway to enter the air shaft that leads to the lab.  Sonic thanks the network and watches as Sleuth Dawggy-Dawg and Kicks-A-Lot (last seen in Sonic the Hedgehog #27) leave.

Soon Sonic and the new freedom fighters travel across the pathway.  Part of the pathway gives way and Sonic starts to fall.  Dylan grabs Sonic's hand and pulls him back to the pathway.  Sonic is a little upset and as they walk through the air shaft Penelope tells Sonic that this is no time to argue.  Sonic says that they're at the lab and removes the grate from the air shaft.

Robotnik laughs at Sonic and says he discovered that Sonic is powerless.  The freedom fighters watch from roboticizers as Sonic teases Robotnik.  Robotnik orders his combots to attack.  Sonic realizes that the new freedom fighters are no match for the combots.  He wishes for another ring since the lake only releases one ring per day.  Suddenly Sonic realizes that he has a ring in his backpack.  As the fight continues, Sonic removes the ring from his backpack.  He doesn't feel any different and Sonic soon sees the combot that exploded earlier.  The ring that he threw at the combot was still there.  Sonic leaps toward the ring and grabs it, gaining his speed.  Sonic easily destroys the combots and frees the freedom fighters.  Robotnik escapes and tells Sonic not to think about stealing any technology since there is a bomb that will explode in a minute.

After the explosion, Sonic asks if everybody escaped.  Sally says that everyone is fine.  Sonic says that he'll meet Robotnik again.  A shadowy figure (that looks like Nack) says he will meet Sonic again, too.

"Bedtime Tails!"
'A scintillating saga of triumph and tragedy crafted with care in the mighty Mobius manner by Mike Kanterovich & Ken Penders, with Jon D'Agostino, Vickie Williams, & Barry Grossman.'

Tails decides to check up on Sonic, who has a cold.  Tails says he has just the thing and brings a stack of comic books that he has written and drawn.  He explains that since he has a captive audience, Tails will read Sonic the third issue of Freedom Fighters.

As a rocket ship traveled, some solar winds took it off course.  The travelers were hit by galactic rays before crash landing on a planet.  After the crash, they discovered that they had super powers and decided to fight for freedom.

Sonic asks how they were able to survive the crash, and Tails explains it was because they are super heroes.  Tails clears his throat and begins to read again.

A mysterious flare explodes in the sky above the country that said Freedom Fighters.  Sonic asks what it means and Sally says that she didn't waste money on her flare gun.  Sally explains that an alien spacecraft is now making its way through the squirrel galaxy (see the second issue of Freedom Fighters).  Suddenly there is a thump and the Freedom Fighters rush to the roof.  Robotnicus stands on the roof, ready to dine on the planet.  Sally says that it sounds like Robotnicus will eat the entire planet, so Sonic runs away and soon reappears with golden cream-filled Twinkles.  Sonic gives the twinkles to Robotnicus, who eats more than a thousand bags.  Robotnicus is upset that the Freedom Fighters spoiled his appetite and given him a stomach ache.  He decides to leave for his home planet for a seltzer and promises to return for dinner.  Sonic says that they'll be waiting with more Twinkles.

Tails shuts his comic book and asks what Sonic thought about the story.  Sonic is fast asleep.  Tails figures that Sonic must be sicker than he thought.  The next day, Sonic comes into Tails' room to tell Tails that he is better.  Tails says that he's sick and Sonic says he has just the thing.  Sonic quickly types on a computer, draws, and prints his own comic.  He soon returns to Tails and begins reading him a comic called Bat-Sonic.
