Knuckles has faced the evils of the Dark Legion, Enerjak, and Mammoth Mogul.
Now he must decide if should keep his obligations with the citizens on the
Floating Island or with echidnas everywhere.
An echidna approaches Athair, who was recalling how he recently had to
intervene in an event (from Knuckles the Echidna #9
and Sonic the Hedgehog #56). Athair
explains that his time on the journey has come to an end, so Yanar must take
his place. Although Yanar objects, he accepts his new role until another
echidna arrives. Yanar gathers up the echidnas and begins to lead them
on their journey. The Ancient Walkers call to Athair as he watches
Yanar leave.
Lara-Le prays inside the Aurorium. Once she leaves, she is surprised
to see Knuckles waiting for her. Knuckles explains that he was heading
toward the Echidna Security Team when he saw her enter the building.
Lara-Le tells Knuckles that everyone is welcome in the Aurorium, even though
she is not surprised that Knuckles does not feel comfortable. As they
approach the Echidna Towers, Lara-Le asks Knuckles if he studied the Tomes.
Knuckles replies that he studied other subjects instead. Lara-Le is
upset and says he was trained to be a guardian. Knuckles and Lara-Le
enter Lara-Le's apartment and find somebody waiting for them.
Constable Remington questions Julie-Su, telling her that he has affidavits
showing that she worked for the Dark Legion. Julie-Su tells Remington
to ask Knuckles for the truth. Remington says that Knuckles did not
recall much of events with Enerjak. Julie-Su lowers her head and explains
that she doesn't know what to say. Remington tells her that she will
have plenty of time to think and leaves the room.

Lara-Le welcomes Athair, but Knuckles is not pleased. Lara-Le forces
Knuckles to apologize before asking why Athair is there. Athair explains
that it is the time of the prophecy and he needs Knuckles. Knuckles
says he's already busy, and Athair says he'll get busier. The masks
of the Ancient Walkers surround Knuckles and Athair and they both disappear.
Lara-Le hopes that Knuckles will return safe.
Teri-Lu gives Remington a snack, reports, and a mug shot of a criminal
that has not been seen since his parole. After Remington studies the
mug shot, Teri-Lu leaves. Archimedes suddenly appears on the desk
and asks Remington if he has seen Knuckles. After Remington says he
has not seen Knuckles, he asks Archimedes to talk about Julie-Su.
Knuckles and Athair appear on the eastern hemisphere of Mobius. To
Knuckles' surprise, there are echidnas walking in a canyon below him.
Athair explains that their ancestors made a choice 600 years ago.
Knuckles' ancestors, Jor-Dann and Kayla-La, were the scientists that discovered
a comet that would destroy Echidnaopolis (from Sonic #34). After Kayla-La
presented her solution to the problem, Arakkis, a holy man, objected to the
idea and said that echidnas were meant to stay in Downunda. When the
high council agreed to implement Kayla-La's plan, Arakkis asked that the
high council allow anyone wanting to follow Arakkis to do so and he would
not interfere with the plan, in return.
The high council then gave everyone the option to follow Arakkis even though
they believed that they were pursuing the best course of action. Arakkis
and his followers left and have wandered ever since, still looking for their
home. The echidnas tried settling in areas only to find that others
already claimed the area or others wished to harm them. Soon the technology
brought with the echidnas became a burden, since things like their vehicles
needed spare parts in order to be repaired. The echidnas rejected
the things from their past for a more simple life. Later that night,
the Ancient Walkers appeared to Arakkis and promised to help him look after
his tribe. Knuckles thinks that the situation is the same as the guardians.
Athair explains that the difference is that the guardians have to be related.
Espio, Mighty, and Vector sit at a restaurant and talk about Julie-Su.
Suddenly Charmy flies toward the group and says that Remington wants to
see them now.
Athair senses that something is wrong and says that the Day of Fury is
at hand. Knuckles is surprised since he believed that the prophecies
told Athair the time. Athair explains that the Tome of Prophecies
only gives signs to look for, not the specific day and time. Yanar
tells everyone to find higher ground. As the echidnas climb up the
canyon, the ground shakes and a river of lava springs from the ground.
An echidna falls from the cliff, and Knuckles manages to glide over and
save him. Knuckles wants to find a safe place for the echidnas, but
Athair says that there is no safe place. Athair studied the Tomes
and knows that the Day of Fury is nature adapting to the changes in the
environment. In one location, Sally hangs on for life as heavy winds
try to blow her away. Elsewhere, Sonic and Tails find shelter from
pouring rains. Meanwhile, Uncle Chuck is surprised to see foot-deep
snow (these events happen after Sonic #57).
Athair explains that the last Day of Fury was 1200 years ago. Knuckles
asks how anyone survived, and Athair replies that hardly any survived.
The echidnas try and climb the cliffs as the lava continues to rise.
(To be continued.)
