World Meteorological Organization
Weather and climate are truly international and global issues. All weather
phenomena, large and small, are interconnected in some way regardless the borders of
nations.
For example, read about the NOAA
study on the effects of African droughts and dust on the weather in the Caribbean.
Therefore, the businesses of weather prediction and climate change, for example,
require global cooperation and coordination.
The international organization coordinating most of the global weather and
climate related activities is the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
It is a United Nations specialized agency and has its headquarters in
Geneva, Switzerland. Under the WMOs Regional
Programme, the world is divided in six regional
associations:
Caribbean states and territories belong to two regional associations, to RA III and
RA IV.
The
Regional Office (Asunción, Paraguay) of WMO for the Americas and the
Subregional Office (San José, Costa Rica) for North America, Central America
and the Caribbean cover the Greater Caribbean countries. These offices
publish jointly a bulletin
(Regional Newsletter, in Spanish and English) dealing with actual regional
issues.
