Shaken Baby Syndrome
One type of child abuse that is often spoken of but misunderstood by the public is  "shaken baby syndrome" (SBS). This usually serious injury to the brain cannot be caused by the typical bouncing of a baby or gently shaking. SBS is the result of VIOLENT shaking back and forth. The brain is not a tight fit in the skull and can move around within it. The result of SBS is that the brain cells swell (Cerebral Edema) and can put pressure on the lower part of the brain (brainstem) which controls breathing and heart rate. Swelling also puts pressure on arteries to the brain, pressure decreases oxygen to the brain and you get even more swelling. Retinal hemorrage is seen 90% of the time in SBS cases.
