HISTORY :
The origin of Jagaddhatri Puja can be traced centuries back in books like"Katyani Tantra". The origin of Jagaddhatri is also elaborated here . But the tradition was later lost. According to "Kshitish Banshabali Charit" Maharaj Krishnachandra Roy the zamindar of Krishnanagar reintroduced the Jagaddhatri & Annapurna pujas during his rule (1728 - 1782) . So it is commonly known that the tradition of Jagaddhatri puja owes it's origin to Maharaj Krishnachandra Roy.
Krishnachandra & his son Shibchandra were once prisioned by Nawab of Bengal ,Meer Kashim, & kept in the city of Munger. But the British defeated the Nawab and the latter fled from Munger. Thus Krishnachandra & Shibchandra were set free. It was the time of Durga pujas & Krishnachandra was keen to offer his pujas at Krishnanagar. He along with Shibchandra set sail along the river Ganges. But it was too late when the duo reached Krishnanagar. The pujas were over by then. Weak and frustated Krishnachandra fainted learning the news. Then a Godess riding a lion appeared in his dream and said "Worship me just one month after the Durga pujas & your offer will be equivalent to Durga puja". Krishnachandra called the Pundits (ie religious experts ) and told them about his dream. One of them said that the Godess appeared in his dream was none other than Godess Jagaddhatri .The Godess people worshipped centuries ago but somehow discontinued later. The clay modelers of Ghurni were called upon. Under the guidance of the Pundits the clay modelers made the idol of Jagaddhatri. Krishnachandra offered his pujas and the tradition of Jagaddhatri pujas was reintroduced. The Jagaddhatri idol of Rajbari is still exclusive in style ,the lion resembling a horse. However the Jagaddhatri puja of Krishnanagar Rajbari has lost it's past grandure & glamour but still attracts thousands of devotees and visitors during the pujas.
Today the jagaddhatri puja of Krishnanagar has become a major religious & social event. Hundreds of pujas are organised by the local clubs, organisations ,para-s(ie neighbourhood), or families. The entire city is decorated with lights , beautiful pandals are constructed with bamboo structure & coloured linens.Thousands of people pour in the city to enjoy the pujas , visiting the pandals throughout the night. After the pujas are over the idols are immersed in the Jalangi river the following night. According to the tradition, the idols are carried in processions to the Rajbari (Where the Maharaja & Maharani used to view them and award prizes.) & then they proceed towards the river. People crowd all along the route to have a glimpse of the idols in procession .
