DVD NEWS
'Cagney & Lacey' coming on DVD in May
Associated Press
U-Entertainment (2/16/07)
It's been a long while since Tyne Daly has seen an episode of "Cagney & Lacey," her 1980s police drama about a female detective duo fighting crime in a man's world. "I haven't seen it for 17 years, or whatever it's been," Daly, who played Mary Beth Lacey, told the Associated Press on Tuesday. "Eighteen years? 25 years? ... So, you know, I haven't seen them in a very, very long time, but walking down the street in New York City, I still get 'Cagney & Lacey' instead of, you know, other stuff I've done."
The series, which featured Sharon Gless as Chris Cagney, will mark its 25th anniversary on May 8 with the DVD release of its first season. The four-disc package, from MGM Home Entertainment, also contains a two-part documentary and commentary from Gloria Steinem, who championed the show for featuring women in roles that typically went to men. "I'll be really interested to see if anybody wants to see them again," said Daly, 60. "Cagney & Lacey," which ran on CBS from 1982 to 1988, had a "dramatic" start, she recalled. The show was canceled at the end of its first season, only to be recalled by CBS after devoted fans flooded the network with letters. The show went on to win 14 Emmys, including four for Daly and two for Gless.
"It changed the history of television for women," Gless said. "Absolutely changed it." Gless, 63, said she has "never seen a better female character" than Cagney, who struggled with alcoholism and man troubles. "She was ambitious, very strong," she said. "She was very complicated. She was kind of screwed up. Had a lousy attitude, hated authority. She was not what one would ever consider a hero, and that's why I love her. But she was. She was just very, very real."
People connected with the show, Daly said, because "they weren't getting told stories that were primarily about women. ... We didn't tell stories that were about them as much, unless they were the victims."
Now content as a "lady of leisure," Daly, the daughter of the late actor James Daly and the sister of actor Tim Daly, looks back on the show as "a good job." Gless, who recently starred on Showtime's "Queer as Folk," was lured by "the best material." "I took the part because I thought it was a great script," said Gless. "I didn't take it because I wanted to be a role model for the '80s, you know, which is what happened. "I mean, I think I can speak for Tyne: If anybody had come up to us and said, 'How would ou two women like to be role models for the '80s?' ... I would have run in the other direction," Gless said.

Cagney, Lacey, and Me
Executive Producer of the Groundbreaking TV Series Cagney & Lacey Divulges the Real Behind-the-Scenes Story .

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Author Marketing Experts, Inc., an innovative, full service book marketing and promotion firm, announces its new client, Barney Rosenzweig, executive producer of the breakthrough television show Cagney & Lacey and author of Cagney, Lacey, and Me - An Inside Hollywood story or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Blond (iUniverse, May 2007).

Rosenzweig, who's been called "The Man Behind the Women's Movement," used this pioneering TV show about two female New York City police detectives to explore a range of women's issues, from breast cancer to date rape and spousal abuse, that had never appeared on TV before. Rosenzweig had to fight to get the show on the air because its topics were deemed too controversial, and he had to fight equally hard to keep the show from being canceled, devising an ingenious viewer letter-writing campaign launched by Ms. Magazine - which is all meticulously detailed in his insider's account of the show. Cagney, Lacey, and Me is being released around Mother's Day, May 13, 2007, to coincide with the release of the series DVD for the 25th anniversary of the show.

State Within (2006 TV mini-series)
Release date: 1 November 2006

With all this cracking new drama on the way in the autumn you could be forgiven for wanting to get the summer out of the way so we can get on with it. The State Within is Lizzie Mickery and Daniel Percival's (Dirty War) new, tightly plotted conspiracy thriller set in the diplomatic worlds of Britain and the US. The new series traces 17 days in the life of the British Ambassador to the United States. The position of Ambassador to Washington is the pinnacle of success in the Foreign Office and is offered to only the brightest and the best, but Ambassador Mark Brydon finds his skills tested to the limits when, following a major diplomatic incident, he is thrust into a web of tangled relationships and conflicting interests. In a world of high stakes, where manipulation of information means ultimate power, the question is: who can he trust? Jason Isaacs plays British Ambassador Mark Brydon; Sharon Gless plays Lynne Warner, US Secretary of Defense; Lennie James plays Luke Gardner, a British paratrooper awaiting execution on Death Row in Florida; and Eva Birthistle plays Jane Lavery, the human rights lawyer assigned to him. The strong cast also features Ben Daniels, Neil Pearson, Alex Jennings, Rahnuma Panthaky, Genevieve O'Reilly and Noam Jenkins. Filming in Canada should have been completed last month and The State Within will reach our screens later this year.

Sharon Gless is back on TV since last autumn. Her new series 'Thick and Thin' is one more chance after 'Queer As Folk' to be seen on screen. Some details about the show:
The Cast
Amy Halloran as Jen
Sharon Gless as Deanna
Chris Parnell as
Mel Rodiriguez as Joe
Martin Mull as Kenny
Jessica Capshaw as Mary

About The Show
From multi Emmy-Award winning producer Lorne Michaels' Broadway Video Television comes this half-hour comedy about Mary (Jessica Capshaw, "The Practice"), a formerly fat woman who embarks on a new journey as a fit and newly single woman. That's easier said than done, however, when Mary's family and friends still see her as her former self. They include her overweight mother (multiple Emmy winner Sharon Gless, "Cagney and Lacey"), her overweight younger sister (newcomer Amy Halloran), her father (Martin Mull, "Roseanne"), and her weight-loss program buddy (Mel Rodriguez, "Panic Room"). But it is at the pool-and-spa company franchise she owns in suburban Florida that she finds her most unlikely confidant, her brother-in-law (Chris Parnell, NBC's "Saturday Night Live"), the company's "leotard-ed" spokesperson named "Captain Chlorine." When a cringe-worthy misstep lands her in bed with her ex, she realizes that getting thin was less about pleasing others -- and more about being comfortable in her own skin. Emmy Award winner Paula Pell ("Saturday Night Live") is the series' creator and writer of the pilot. The executive producers are Lorne Michaels (NBC's "Saturday Night Live") and JoAnn Alfano ("The Tracy Morgan Show"). Gail Mancuso ("Roseanne") directed the pilot. "Thick and Thin" is from by Broadway Video Television in association with NBC Universal Television Studio.

ARTICLE
Sharon Gless is the subject of the TV Feature story on Zap2it.com, titled "Sharon Gless Takes a Shine to Brassy Image" by Jacqueline Cutler. The actress, who has a strong following among gay men and women going back to her Cagney & Lacey days says, "I would not have the career I have without the gay community." She talks about some of her early jobs before getting into show business, and about her close friend Tyne Daly. She also shares the difficulty she had finding roles as she aged. "I hated my 50s," she says. "When I turned 60 last summer, I thought, Who is going to [insult] a 60-year-old woman? So what if you are not a size 4? Come on, cut me some slack. I am having the best time because I cut myself some slack." About the character of Debbie, she adds, "I've never had so much fun playing a character."

ARTICLE
There is a nice written article on the proudparenting.com web site about Sharon and her role as Debbie Novotny in Queer As Folk.

As waitress Debbie Novotny, on QAF, she is the poster mom for PFLAG. The mother of a gay son, and the sister of a gay man dealing with AIDS, Debbie does not suffer fools or homophobes lightly. Producer Ron Cowan calls her a gem. Sharon came to us, he said. When we began casting in Hollywood, Gless contacted us. At first we didn't see her in the part, he said.
Cowan recalls her saying, I have to do this part. Cowan, and his co-executive producer, and life partner Daniel Lipman read her for the part. As soon as she began reading we knew she was Debbie Novotny, Lipman said.

    ARTICLE
Liz Smith wrote about the Queer As Folk premiere in New York:
The good-looking cast of "QAF," plus Jackie, were at the Gramercy Park Hotel's Cobalt Room - Gale Harold, Randy Harrison, Michelle Clunie, Thea Gill, Peter Paige, Scott Lowell, Robert Gant and the fabled Sharon Gless. Sharon has lost weight and looks sensational, much like her original "Cagney & Lacey" self. She told me that after this column wrote that she had bought the rights to Jane Juska's "A Round-Heeled Woman," with hopes to present it onstage, something wonderful happened. Tony-winning producer Anita Waxman ("Bombay Dreams") called, met with Sharon and agreed "in principal" to develop the property for her.
I told Sharon she should insist to the "QAF" producers that she appear in the series as she does in life. The outfits and wig they put on her are, frankly, ridiculous. You can love your gay son and not look as if you're ready for the circus.

    NEW PROJECT
In Liz Smith's "Oscar Ruminations" column today, she writes: "SHARON GLESS is the blond bombshell of TV's great 1980s cop series "Cagney & Lacey." She can currently be seen as the super-supportive mom of a gay man on "Queer as Folk." Sharon is always looking for new worlds to conquer. Now that women of a certain age are on the rise again in Hollywood (Helen Mirren and Julie Walters in "Calendar Girls" ... Diane Keaton in "Something's Gotta Give"), Sharon has optioned an unusual, provocative work and hopes to get it written and filmed. She'd star, of course. This is the sensational Jane Juska book, "A Round-Heeled Woman," which we touted months ago. It tells of the active sexual exploits of a lady no longer dewy-eyed. Sharon owns the TV and stage rights as well as movie rights to this hot property."

Of the book, Publishers Weekly wrote, "Contrary to the lurid title (a "round-heeled woman" was once slang for a prostitute), Juska is a semiretired English teacher with refined tastes: Trollope novels , opera and museums. "Before I turn 67-next March," she wrote to the personals column of the New York Review of Books, "I would like to have a lot of sex with a man I like." While her adventures meeting these men frame her narrative, she's no geriatric Emmanuelle on a coast-to-coast fling, in spite of proclamations like "I adore penises." It's just that she was raised by repressed Midwesterners and had never managed-given her spiritual and physical bulk-a truly fulfilling love affair. Married to a loveless man, she then spent years in social retreat as a single mom. By the time she emerged from her chrysalis, she realized she'd never had a chance at pleasure, hence the ad and her comic adventures with the assortment of men culled from the daily mail."
