Activities

We all know that the first moments in class are crucial. We can avoid many behavioral problems with a simple method called “the speech”! My lecturer, Marsha Hachmon, who is my pedagogical advisor in Levinsky College, gave me this speech. The speech should be done in the first lesson the teacher has with her/his class.

Good Luck !

The speech !

  By Marsha Hachmon

When you walk into the class keep a distance by showing that you’re strong.

If someone is speaking you approach and say “I am waiting for you!”

Show that you’re strong and don’t be afraid.

Wait for them to be quiet. Don’t talk till they are quiet.

Introduce your self, “I am an experienced teacher (even if you’re not), I’ve had much success with your age group and I intend to continue that success with you”.

We will be learning mostly in English but today if something is not clear I’ll repeat it in Hebrew, because I want to make sure you understand everything.

Today I’m going to tell you what I expect from you.

1.     When someone is speaking in class, everyone else will be quiet, whether it’s teacher or pupil.

2.     You will have the books and notebooks needed on your desk at the beginning of each lesson. Starting next week we will begin to use the course book and if you don’t bring it your grade will be lowered. (There are some pupils that have economic problem and won’t be able to buy the book so try to solve the problem with the school library before the beginning of the year).

3.     Notebooks – I expect within the next two lessons for you to have a binder divided as follows: (tell them how you want it to be divided). I will be checking your binders during the year. Each time I’ll take two or three.

4.     Tests – there will be _____ tests each _____. The tests will be on the material learned previous to the exam. There will be a review before each test of the material and the exercise forms.

5.     Quizzes – there will be quizzes in class so it’s very important to know the material. There will be no pop quizzes. You’ll always know in advanced.

6.     Homework – I will never give you homework for no reason. If I give you homework I expect you to do it because I give it to help you. If I see that you haven’t done your homework twice I will lower your grade. Do not copy from each other because you are not going to learn anything. Remember, I don’t just give you homework to waist your time.

7.     During the summer months you can drink in my lessons but bring it with you.

8.     No gum! There will be no gum during English lessons.

9.     Keep your telephones in your bags. I don’t hear or see your phone and you are not going to see mine either.

After the speech tell them to take out a piece of paper and write on it:

o       My name

o       My expectations from this class

o       What I enjoy to do in English class

o       What is difficult for me in English
