In 1995 the Instrumental Music Program added a set of Steel Drums to our repertoire and incorporated the percussion class into an alternative performing group modeled after the popular stage-performing percussion ensemble "STOMP".
The percussion class is entitled S.H.A.P.E. (Sequoyah High Artistic Percussion Ensemble) and performs several times each year; Fine Arts Night, Concertos & Ensemble Concert and other performances at local elementary schools.
After attending the Mid-West International Band & Orchestra Clinic in 1992, we purchased Steel drums from Wheeler Matthews in Seneca, S.C. a nuclear engineer who spent his apprenticeship days studying and performing with Ellie Mannette, the world's inventor and best known advocate of steel drums, or 'pan' music, currently the head of the 'University Tuning Project' at the University of West Virginia.
The steel drum band is the only one of it's kind in the state of Georgia at the high school level.
The steel drum band and percussion ensemble are available for performances upon request.
