| Although it does not seem that this official squadron title was used for the group of I-16s that operated in the North, I believe that it is necessary to mention this separated unit from the rest of units. Although it was formed from the two patrols from 2nd Squadron and one from the 3rd, it acted independently from of the two units of origin. It was formed on the 7th of August, 1937 under the command of Boris Smirnov " Pligunov " who flew from Alcala de Henares to El Albericia (Santander) with patrol leaders Mikhailov and Kerenko and Eloy pilots Gonz�lez Olarro, Juan Huertas, Tom�s Saladrigas, Eduardo Fernandez Prada and Francisco Tarazona. There they are united under the orders of Boris Smirnov with Andr�s Rodriguez Panadero, Luis de Frutos, Restituto F. Toquero, and Daniel Ranz. Some came from 3rd Squadron like Nicholas Sardina Perez and Andr�s the Rodriguez Panadero directed by Yevseviev (Yevsi�ev) with Kusnetsov and Demidov. After the fall of Santander, the Soviets Smirnov, Mikhailov, Kerenko and their mechanics leave the north. Rafael Magri�� transferred in from from I-15s. Initially they work as two units, one based in El Albericia and the other in Torrelavega. After the fall of Santander the first is transferred to Colunga merging both units in Colunga. It is possible that Yevseviev, Kusnetsov and Demidov remained some time in the North after the fall of Santander. |
