| Towards the autumn of 1936 came the first I-16s piloted by Russian aviators who had disembarked in Cartagena and formed the first operative Group with monoplanes. 31 disembarked in October and stationed I-16 type 5s in Los Alc�zares. The first combat takes place on 15-11-36 with a Fiat CR-32. The first loss of an I-16 recognized by the republicans was on 17-11-36 in a combat with a Ju-52 who tried to bomb Madrid. At first, received I-16s were assigned to Grupo 12, but in December of 1936 Grupo 21 is formed, which received all further shipments of them. The first commander was Ivan Kopets. The first two squadrons were based in Soto and Alcala de Henares. |
