Here in the middle of winter I'm begining to appreciate the evergreens I've planted around the house. The pictures above are from the shade garden on the side of the house.
This is one of the Indian Hawthorns I planted last spring. I didn't realize that they produced berries, so that's been a nice surprise. They didn't bloom very much last spring so I'm looking forward to seeing what they do this spring.
O.K. it doesn't look like much now, but just you wait. Here in about 4 months or so hopfully these irises are going to knock your socks off.
Yes, it's action gardening. In the above pictures I'm spreading a layer of compost about one to two inches deep over this garden bed. After spreading it out in a even layer I worked it in to the top 3 to 5 inches of soil using a pitch fork. I then smoothed it out and added another thin layer of compost just for good measure and reapplyed the mulch that I had removed earlier.
These are some violia that I plant last fall, this is the first time I've grown these. So far I'd have to say "Yes sir, I like um"
Some of you might not be aware of this, but there's actually a law in Texas that requires homeowners to plant pansys in the fall. Being a mostly law abiding kinda guy I dutifully plant them every year. Actually I've become quite fond of them, it's nice to have some color in the yard when most plants are all dead looking. For some reason about a third of my pansys died shortly after I planted them. The plants that survived seem to be doing fine now.
