Back Yard 1999
HOME
This was our first year of fairly serious gardening.  I probably crammed to much into too little space.  In these two garden rows there are 4 tomato plants, 6 pepper plants and a bunch of marigolds, zinnias and cosmos.
This is a close-up of the above garden.  These are the marigolds, zinnias and cosmos.
This is our herb garden.  This was our first garden patch that we planted after moving here in 1998.
More of the herb garden.  The oregano in the front, the thyme in the back and the itty-bitty clary sage beside the oregano are all still there and doing fine in 2001.  The basil in the upper right hand side is one of my favorite plants although it's an annual and must be replanted each year.  The borage between the oregano and the thyme did okay, but frankly I thought it was more work than it was worth and haven't planted again since 1999.
The garden in winter, by Texas standards this consitutes a blizzard.  You can see the thyme is still going strong.  In the background along the fence is the honeysuckle that we planted the previous February.
This is the fence on the opposite side of our backyard.  There are 7 hydrangeas and a whole lot of impatiens planted along here.  This garden bed has been my biggest disappointment so far.  The impatiens couldn't take the Texas heat and died.  The hydrangeas held on for a while but finally died in the summer of 2000.  It's so hot and dry here in the summer I don't think they could handle the climate.
We decided to plant honeysuckle along this fence instead of putting up a privacy fence.  Sonja grew up with honeysuckle in her yard and liked the idea of planting it here as well.  Also a portion of the fence at the back of our yard has a differect variety of honeysuckle growing on it (see below) and we like the way it looked.
This honeysuckle has overwhelmed the chain link fence that's buried under all that and is 6 or 7 feet tall now.  I've really learned to like honeysuckle quiet a bit.  It can grow in heavy shade or full sun and is drought resistant and pretty fragrant flowers for about a month in mid-spring.
This is some larkspur that I planted that spring.  It's a really pretty flower, but doesn't like the heat and dies by early summer
