This picture was taken in late summer of 1999. The two rose of sharon bushes were about a foot tall when we planted them that spring. Around the rose of sharon are four o'clocks. I like four o'clocks because they're easy to grow from seed, but the flowers don't open until it's almost dark each day, so I'm not sure they're worth the effort. To the left of the rose of sharon are some yellow zinnias.
This is a closer view of the zinnias from the top picture. Beside the zinnias are some white coneflowers. These were supposed to be perennials but they didn't come back the next year. The little orange flowers in front of the cone flowers are gazinas. They eventually grew quiet large and for a while took over this space. The plant in the bottom left hand corner is a peony.
This picture is of the other side of the front porch. The white flowers in front are zinnias and the yellow flowers beside them are marigolds.
The three pictures above are trees I planted the first fall that we were here. At the time this picture was taken these trees had be planted about 8 months. The top picture is a crepe myrtle tree with marigolds beneath it. The tree immediately above and to the left is a cottonless cottonwood tree with petunias growing under it. I wanted to plant a cottonwood because it's the state tree of Kansas which is where we're from originally. To the right is a redbud tree with zinnias growing under it. My parents had a big old redbud tree growing in the back yard and I liked so much I decided to plant one myself.
