Sandra Schmirler

A Tribute to a Legend

Sandra was by far the best curler ever to grace this earth. In her short life, she achieved so much... provincial, national and world titles, as well as Olympic gold... the first and only Olympic gold in curling that has ever been brought home to Canada was brought home by the Schmirler Rink in 1998.

Her death was sudden and tragic. She left behind her loving husband Shannon, and her two young daughters, Sara and Jenna, as well as a whole country to grieve for her. Her funeral was broadcasted on national television, to offer the country a chance to grieve. Many, who never even got the chance to meet her, said they felt like they had lost a dear friend.

The Sandra Schmirler Foundation was founded in her honour, to help the famillies of terminally ill children. They arrange a large number of fundraisers, including the Hand-in-Hand pin, a symbol, with four hands representing team unity, a design that Sandra herself approved before she died. Also, every time you purchase a product made by Scott Paper, money is sent to the Foundation.

Many curling fans will agree, that even if they never got the chance to meet her, they miss her deeply still.
